Re: How much more can you take?

arganbright2, your post kind of ticks me off. I get so tired of hearing people, generally younger people saying "there is nothing to do" in Ames.

My advice: Get off your butt and take a look around. There are tons of incredibly interesting things for everyone to do except the immature jerks who demand to be entertained 24/7.

My years in Ames were so full of "things to do" that my only regret is not having the time to do more of them. I think if you looked around just a little bit, you'd find something very interesting to do.

That seems a little over the top.

Herbiedoobie I have been saying that for years! People who are bored tend to be boring people! You are so right! People who **tch about Ames usually come from a small town where there is nothing to do, and they're expecting NYC. Even if that isn't the case, I don't care where you are, if you can't find anything to do, it isn't where you are, its you.

Re: How much more can you take?

Name three things that Ames has that another major college town in the midwest doesn't have. Seriously, go to the University of Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State and see if there is a tad more to do. Of the major college towns in the midwest, Iowa State is towards the bottom. Sorry to trip your trigger cowboy, but the truth hurts.

Most college towns are the same anyway. You drink, go out to eat, maybe a movie and drink again. With the exception of a few, you can do the same things in all of them. Only problem I have with Ames is that it's cold in the winter, otherwise its just fine.

It's not what we have that no other University town doesn't have, it's just that we are at least equivalent to other midwest college towns.

I've been around a little, and every single college town/University has people who complain that there is "nothing to do". I'm extremely positive on Ames, relative to any other place I've been. The library is outstanding, lots of neat organizations, none of which are so large that you cannot make an impact.

Recently, researchers at Iowa State have developed a "cloaking system" just like the ones on Star Trek. (I'm not kidding) How many folks on here have seen the tornado simulator at Howe? That thing is cooler than cool! Larger/more prestigious universities might have these things, but they are no way near as accessible. I bet if you walked into the office at Howe and asked when you could see it in action, they'd set you up.

Iowa State has an awesome campus. Really beautiful, and if you're bored, you can actually get tickets for nearly any of the sporting events without having been born to them, like some other universities.

Ames is within driving distance of Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City and Omaha. It's also less than an hour north of Des Moines. I really, really treasure the weekend roadtrips me and my buddies took, every once in a while.

If you like outdoor adventure, how about Ledges? Or go to Boone and ride the scenic railroad. Or attend the National Junior Rodeo up in some town northwest of there whose name escapes me at the moment There are all sorts of canoeing/rafting/tubing opportunities in Central Iowa. How about skiing at Boone? They still do that? If you like to hunt, Iowa is getting better and better all the time for that.

Want to meet girls? Take a dance class. I think you'd be surprised.

The problem with comparing Ames/Iowa State to other Midwest universities and college towns, is that for the slight advantage they may have in certain activities, there are all sorts of drawbacks, especially for college aged kids, namely financial and time-related.

Can you be more specific about what these places have to offer that Ames doesn't? Several of them are much higher population centers (Lincoln, Minneapolis, Madison, Champaign / Urbana), but Manhattan, Kansas? I've always been intrigued by this argument and I agree with HerbieDoobie; I never lacked for activities when I was in Ames.

As to the original topic, after watching ISU athletics for 25+ years, I can take any disappointment they throw at me. I'm hopeful that my Cubs and my Cyclones are near to offering me some joy in the near future!

Good point, what exactly is it that you are looking to do? If you weren't so boring, you could name a bunch of things.

The only thing these other cities have over ames is a good gentalmen's club. Columbia, Lawerence, and the little apple are so similar to ames it is scary and the campus at Lincoln sucks it is a dry campus.

That has nothing to do with it but thanks for the neg rep.

My point is (and I'll spell it out for you a little more clearly this time) that with the exception of this basketball season, there has been a lot of promise and expectations. When expected to do great things, we can't even do average things...we just **** it all away. THAT'S what is frustrating.

Re: How much more can you take?

Not trying to knock on the orginator of the thread but I noticed he's an '04 grad which means he probably came to ISU during some peak seasons. It's been tough recently but it has been worse. My freshman year in 1998 the FB team won 2 games and the basketball team went 15-15 in Larry's first season. While I'll give you the past 2 seasons of football have been frustrating with the expectations we all had this is about what we expected before the season started. Maybe the best phrase to use is "mamma said there would be days like this." We got a little spoiled early with some wins but now we are playing teams that are bigger and deeper than us.

The worst thing for us to do now is to quit on the team and not have good crowds at Hilton the rest of the season. If anything we need to pack Hilton for the rest of the season so this team has something to look forward to when they come back home to play. This is another reason why I get worried some of us are getting high expectations for Chizik's first season. We've seen a few (but rare) crazy predictions of 8 or 9 wins when realistically we'll probably be no better than half that with what we have returning and having to learn a new system.

Right now ISU athletics is in a transistion phase where the foundation is being built for greater things. Patience is key and there will be some rough games but no matter what we need to keep up the morale and support because the players feed off the fans as well.

That's a great point. A lot of recent graduates aren't as jaded as other fans who have been around longer and have suffered time and time and time again. Their frustrations are good thing because of the higher expectations. They don't carrry 'the long suffering pain'. As the senior Reggie Hayward once said after being asked about the very old Iowa football streak (to paraphrase), "I don't know what you're talking about, I've never lost to them".

Re: How much more can you take?

I understand the frustration with football, but what did people expect with Basketball this year? I know we all got excited about beating Nebraska and Mizzou, but we barely escaped at MU with a miracle win and Nebraska probably is the worst team in the league.

Add that to the fact that we totally lucked out with the recruitment of W. Johnson and this season could be a heck of a lot worse. I still like Dodie, Cory, and Wesley and I think we have an excellent base to build around. Add that to an excellent class next year and the future is bright. I still don't think we'll see a top 4 finisher until 08-09 though.
