Guess you didn't hear the news, don't expect that to happen any time soon:

I love directv, but they have been saying this for YEARS! They also promised DSM HD locals by Q3 2006, it is Q1 2007 and no DSM locals in HD yet. I don't really care since I will do OTA due to better signal quality, but their marketing dept gets a little ahead of the tech folks. Keep in mind to get those new HD channels you need a HR20 or R20 receiver.

Re: OT: HDTV Question

Ok, so I found out my TV has the HD tuner built in. I plug an indoor antenna into my TV just to see if things work and the locals are fuzzy (8 and 13...I don't even want to talk about 5).

From reading in the other HD thread, I thought it was an all or nothing? Or am I just picking up the "standard" channels?

I live in West Des Moines and I'm just using the atenna set Mediacom gave me for now. Maybe I need to buy something "better"?

Any advice or help?

Sounds like you're just getting the regular locals. When OTA HD channels get interference they don't come in or get "pixely" and the sounds skips.

Also, the HD channels are 5.1, 8.1, 13.1, 17.1, etc. If you're seeing just 5, 8 and so on - you're defintely just getting the regular channels.

I don't know if the stuff from Mediacom will work or not. I thought I read in the other thread about HD - someone said those would work to pickup HD channels - but I can't recall for sure.

ripvdub - I have the OTA antenna and that's the only way to get HD locals if you have DirecTV. The last word from them is the locals would not be available in HD for our area until the 4th quarter of this year. It's a huge difference between the regular locals you get via the satellite and HD locals you get OTA. It's one simple cable and if you're HD box isn't too old from what I understand - you can run the antenna cable right into the box. This way, you can view the HD locals on your DirecTV guide, record them if you have a DVR, etc.

A few members here were kind enough to share some of this very helpful information with me. I really suggest you skim through that other thread.

Re: OT: HDTV Question

To hook up to my computer so I can record, I bought a 32 inch HDMI/tuner Westghouse TV for pipping on the internet on Cyber Monday (Monday after Thansksgiving)from Best Buy for $560. I then took the same set back to Ne Fun Mart that I had bought two days before for $880 and gladly was credited. Point is some of the best buys are Cyber Monday and you do not have to beat the crowd on Friday in the stores. Now I sit on my couch with wireless keyboard and have a second TV hooked up to watch games. Cyber Monday is a great deal. I can record on my computer and use exterior power antenna for a different station amd also watch the second TV. And we put the XBox Live downstarirs on the projection TV so we can wireless whatever we have recorded on the main level computer to the TV downstairs in the gameroom. Things have improved in the last 10 years. Hope ISU sports does the same. Looks like a good bet.

I must say, that is the first thing I've seen that's made me consider switching to a dish.

Wait till DTV actually HAS the channels before switching. DirecTVs HD channels are still a joke. 5 channels (only 2 good ones) for $11 a month. If I am paying that kinda $$ I better see some boobies on those channels.

That being said, there was a launch failure of the company that DTV uses to send up new sats, so it may be a while before they actually get all those channels, I am guessing it won't really be until 2008.
