How much debt has college tuition put you in?

I'm a freshman here and debt after college is gonna hit hard...just wondering how much everyone else is having to deal with.

Re: How much debt has college tuition put you in?

I had $24,000 and I graduate in 5 years. I did have two majors though. I graduated in 2000 so I know tuition has gone up quite a bit from when I started.

I am thankful that my parents are paying for mine. But if I have another semester like my last one, then I am paying.

Re: How much debt has college tuition put you in?

I have one semester of school left after this spring, so I'm only looking at having roughly $16,000 in 4 years. However, the biggest reason for this, is that I wiped out my savings paying for my first year, and being an in-state student doesn't hurt.

Yeesh, you guys are lucky. Let's just say I am much, much, much more in debt than anyone so far with college debt. Much more...

Re: How much debt has college tuition put you in?

I graduated in 1999 with $25,000 in school debt. Although it felt like I was being crushed by school debt at the time, I wouldn't be where I am today without it. Actually, my first job out of college had a starting salary of barely more than $25K, and I was a finance grad. However, only 8 years later I am making significantly more and the $25K in school debt proved to be a very good investment.

Hang in there. I guaranty the school debt thing won't bother you at all 5 - 10 years after graduation (as long as your not a psychology major) ha

The wife and I each have around 40,000 both graduated in 2005. She did it in 5 years and I had a longer route through 3 schools and 3 years @ ISU. After reading these posts it seems our debt is not the norm.

You'd be surprised with how many people I work with in the finance/business world that had majors which had nothing to do with business. In fact, I am in marketing now myself although i was a finance major. The key to your success after graduation will be your E.Q. (Emotional Intelligence), not your I.Q.. A college degree just gets you in the door. After day one, your boss won't care what your major was or your gpa, all they care about is your job peformance and "what have you done for me lately"? If the English thing doesn't work out, don't be surprised if you find yourself in the business world teaching finance/marketing folks like me how to speak and write better, ha ha

Re: How much debt has college tuition put you in?

I'm an out of state student, so here's how it works for me:

I'm graduating in five years, and I'll come out of here with roughly $19000 in subsidized loans (loans I won't pay back till I'm out), $8000 dollars in Federal Perkins loans (also subsidized), and roughly $35000 in unsubsidized loans (loans that are currently in my parent's name and being paid for, slowly, by my lowly PT income).

All told, I believe that adds up to $62000 in loans.

Yay for out of state tuition!

Green hills for thy throne, and for crown a golden melody
Ringing in the hearts of all who bring thee love and loyalty
Dear Alma Mater, make our spirits great
True and valiant like the bells of I-O-WA STATE!

Everyone single one of you has it easy... Just imagine paying 30k a year for private school.... Then pick up another 3 years for law school...

Re: How much debt has college tuition put you in?

None, but I went to school back in the day when you could work part time and pay for that semesters school. My parents always helped out a little and I begged them for book money. I worked 2 jobs in college doing programming and computer admin work for the university and paid for everything while I was there. It was really nice getting out and only having your last Ubill to take care of.

BUT, when I was in school tuition was $795 per semester...Wow, I am old!
