Hilton is a masterpiece, a building that stands on it's own. It's a tribute to the ancient temples that started sport and should not be covered up with large glass boxes that take away from that monumental approach to Hilton.
I understand the need for upgraded facilities, but this is not the answer, and I hope Pollard, Dean Morton (sp?), and everyone else realizes what ISU has and really comes through with better answers to this architectural question. This is unacceptable!!! You ever see the ancient temples/buildings for yourself? Didn't think so. All we've got to go on are the modern day renderings. And from the majority of the modern-day renderings, all of those buildings, including the Acropolis among others, only appeared to be stand-alone from one side. All of them had buildings attached. So it can be argued that Hilton resembles them even more now that it's not a stand-alone.
As far as Hilton looking like a throwback to classical buildings, I've NEVER thought of it as a classical throwback, and I never will. Sure, it has columns. So do most of today's skyscrapers. Are those classical throwbacks? Didn't think so.
I'm all for the upgrades.

But, no matter what we do to Hilton it'll look better than that converted water treatment plant they call Carver Hawkeye.

Or the Armory in the past.

Consider this a warning from the prophet....
One day, God (aka Gary Thompson) will send a plague onto the floor of the armory and smite the evil Architorture students who currently infest it, and restore it to it's former glory. | |

Well done to all in this thread.
Sat behind Gary last night at the OU game. I had a rough day, was tense, a little upset because we were late arriving. But once we sat down - I was at peace (the 17 pt lead helped).
Then then the clouds moved in, and the infidels rose. The lead was suddenly cut to 4. Gary spoke - "come on, let's get a basket now". And low and behold, a basket did cometh. And Gary stood and applauded, and all was well in his kingdom.
He had this cool aura about him too.....
My wife went to the game with my father-in-law and I. He and I both went to ISU, she went to Iowa (I know, I know. Yes, yes - but I love her all the same). We weren't sitting behind Gary at first, we were across the arena in 111. A friend of my in-laws have tickets behind the Thompson row. So before we went over, I pointed out to my wife where the friends were and then which one was Gary.
"Who is Gary Thompson?"
The looks were aghast. Even the three year old girl sitting in front of us looked back in disbelief. Oh, my poor wife. I've failed in my attempts to convert her from the evil empire. Wretched failure....

I was there when they crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword
I threw the dice when they pierced his side
But I've seen love conquer the great divide

I once managed the Kwik Shop by the library. The building was/is owned by Gary Thompson, and that is where he kept his office, at the time. He would come over when the cookies were done, and we would speak for a couple of minutes. Every once in awhile, he'd invite one of the Banacek twins (I keep forgetting which one worked for ISU at the time, Ed or Lou), and we'd have warm cookies together.
Funny how two of my all time favorite sports figures would come over, have a cup of coffee and a warm cookie. Now THAT's what I truly love about ISU. If you really want to, you can actually talk to someone in a position of importance, or get to know someone you admired, growing up.
