Winter/off season conditioning

Can anyone give an update on how the winter/off season conditioning is going since the new strength and conditioning coaches have been brought on? Also, what are the difference in styles from McGettigan to Sheppard?

i've heard multiple references from players along the lines of "running more than we ever have before" and "bootcamp"

I was at the Cyclone club Lunch on tuesday and Jamie said a couple of players told him they have never worked out that hard before. It sounded like it was more demanding but the players are putting the resources to work.

Re: Winter/off season conditioning

What I think is a great benefit is having Sheppard for the strength and conditioning and Becton for speed and agility.

The hiring of Becton was just about as impressive as Sheppard. Watching Baylor last year was fun and exciting. Though outmanned in many games, they never seemed to tire.

There's no doubt our O-Line last year had strength - they were some big boys. But they lacked speed and endurance. With these two joining the Clones, Chizik addressed this weakness...

As far as the comment about "bootcamp" - now is as good as time as any to see who wants to play and who wants to play by a new set of rules.

How can you not be excited by '07 Cyclone football?!?

A friend told me that Carper told me that he is doing 10 times the work that he did under MAC, which is awesome to hear, because we need it!

Having gone through bootcamp and jump school, it definitely weeds out the ones without heart and commitment. It's also a good bonding experience.

Re: Winter/off season conditioning

I heard about the off season bootcamp and a meeting where Chizek said he was embarrassed as he watched the effort of the 2006 cyclones, and explained what the expectations were now....and whoever isn't on board knows where the door is. Nobody left. Bring on Kent State.

I would like to win a game by more than a touchdown next year.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Cyclones physically dominate an opponent. It's been a long time since we've seen ISU do that to somebody else.

Some players have mentioned they miss Getty.....heh.

The pre 5 AM workouts are ball-busters, that's for sure. Shepp's serious.

Hmm. Reminds me of the Herb Brooks said during practices prior to the 1980 Winter Olympics "Miracle on Ice" (paraphrased):

I'm with ya. I'd like to be able to walk out of JTS for one game and feel good about a win. I did somewhat about Mizzu - yet it ended in such a strange way it was hard to do so.

I like hearing these training & conditioning sessions are being labeled boot camp. Exactly what this team needs. Our basketball team, young and undermanned thrives on working harder than anyone else.

Our football team will need to do this as well in order to succeed.

I really see Chizik and G-Mac as similar types of guys. Disciplined, honest, expects hard work, longs to win, knows you can't just measure success in W/L's when building a program, etc.

I look forward to our fruitful years under these two.

From my friends on the team, they tell me this new staff is a bunch of ball-busters, and classy and sincere at the same time. The workouts are tough as heck, yet one of my buds had to drop the program to get his grades up this semester, and he told me that Chizik told him straight up "WHEN your grades get up, you're welcome back on the team. Just keep them there and we can work you back into the depth chart." I'm stoked for these guys to lead us to the next level, and show TU that Football wasn't Cy's gift to the state of Texas.

Re: Winter/off season conditioning

This is nothing new for a new coach to come in and start the weeding out process. The same thing happened in January 1995. The team will definitely be better off though by going through this. Don't expect anything until probably 2009, that is how long it will take for the O-line to heal itself.
