Cyclone Warnings
Does anyone else think that we should get rid of the "submarine diving" alert sound, and go with the true Cyclone warnings? If we told everyone in Ames that 90, 60 and 45 minutes before kick-off that the Sirens would go off, we could be able to pull it off. If there was a real warning, they could pronounce it like they do with quick-moving storms and say "This is not a test..." but if they only fired for a cycle or two, I think it would sound a heck of a lot better than the "buh-loooga, buh-loooga" that we had last season.
Thoughts?

Re: Cyclone Warnings
I think there are alert warning sirens common to certain geographies other than our traditional one that could be used. Heck I think the best one unique to us is the part of the intro music that sounds like a form of siren. Record that in a loop and play it, there is recognition factor with that.

.... it's only 6 Saturdays a year .... COME ON !!! OMG!!! AMEN, 100%!!! I have an 81 year old grandpa who goes to games every now and again, whereas I am an season ticket holder - and even my gpa tells me that it's the excitement and the crowd noise is what he goes for (that and the AMAZING tailgating ISU has to offer.) If we want to be a big time football program and get to the next level, we have to make every facet better, JP is gonna be renovating the stadium in the near future and I think this siren is just another small (but necessary) part of it, it needs to be LOUD. I just love the Intimidation factor. Also the fans need to stay all game, every game and stay loud as HELL. We (the fans) as well as we (the university) can make Jack Trice Stadium a even better experience than it already is. I want something loud that gets everybody in the stadium's blood flowing and gets people pumped up, it's also why I love the chanting Zombie Nation song "OhOhOh" we play before kickoff, it just sends chills down my spine and makes me want to cheer the entire game.
GO CYCLONES!!! (points out another first down)

Re: Cyclone Warnings
B/c so many people are gonna believe there's a tornado on a bright, sunny day!
On those rainy, lightning-filled crap-ola days, tho...

Re: Cyclone Warnings
half the time you couldn't hear those damn "sirens" and when you could, I personally thought they sounded like a dying beached whale, or something. There were a lot of good ideas last year that had terrible execution, when it came to the pregame.
Who are you George Costanza? I am the opposite of every man you've ever met. -
Re: Cyclone Warnings
i think they should make it one big loud siren right b4 the players come out to the field, also get rid of the weather man and ust make it so its like the weather channel making a warning for a cyclone in jack trice

Re: Cyclone Warnings
When I first heard there were going to be sirens before kickoff, I was estatic -- until I heard the submarine "DIVE, DIVE, DIVE" sound. Oy. It would sound so much more intimidating with an actual tornado siren. We're the Cyclones, not the Navy.

Re: Cyclone Warnings
Gotta pile on the siren as well. I love the idea, I think it is perfect, but yes, the submarine thing is cheesy and it has to go. I think this entire thing can be solved with some simple communication. First off, I could barely hear the thing right outside the stadium, so how do people hear it inside their houses several blocks away? Second, they test the real sirens every month and people don't go running for cover. Why? Because people know when they will go off and they don't test if the weather is bad.
I have seen many games on tv this last season where sirens that sounded like real tornado sirens were set off after touchdowns etc, so it is done. Let's notify everyone in the near vicinity of whats going on. Once the kickoff time is set circulate fliers or something announcing that the sirens will be sounding a 1, 1:15, and 1:30 this Saturday at the stadium. In the case that the weather is questionable, cancel the siren for that day. I think this is a great idea overall, and I really want to see them make some good sirens happen.

When I first heard it I certainly wasn't running for the storm shelter, I was running to my battle station!

Lose the sub sound and only do the REAL tornado siren right before the game. It should be localized enough that there should be no problem with any resident thinking it was a real tornado.
Has anyone sent this suggestion to JP?
Maybe we should do a poll and send the results to him? I would really like to see this happen because it would be unique to us only.

Re: Cyclone Warnings
Agreed. When I heard that sirens would be sounded, I was excited until I actually heard what they were using. It sounds like the horn on one of those 1930's Fords: "ah-WOOOOOO-gah ah-WOO-gah!"
I hope that we can put together a respectable collection of opinions-cum-letter and send it to JP and the Marketing Department.
The two potential problems I've considered are that:
1) There may be state or federal regulations regarding the use of tornado warning systems.
2) The National Weather Service may control the Ames/Story County siren system.
(I've read of many places whose sirens are activated by the regional NWS office, but there are also ambiguous references to local authorities being able to do so, as well. The Ames Police Department's website says that an officer's sighting of an actual tornado is valid grounds to activate the system.)
I've been looking for a little while, and I can't find any rules or regulations regarding the use of warning systems. That doesn't mean they're not out there, though. Maybe somebody with a little better knowledge of where to find laws could help? As for getting the necessary cooperation in Ames, it sounds like someone would have to start with the Ames Police.

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.
