Re: TSN's Dienhart ranks this year's coaching hires
As my High School once told us, "Opinions are like A$$holes everyone has one". This was in reference to a lot of people thinking there would not be enough basketballs to keep everyone on the team happy. Just one Man's subjective opinion. -
Re: TSN's Dienhart ranks this year's coaching hires
The times I heard Dienhart on Deace's show and read his stuff in The Sporting News he was always a big Coach McCarney fan. Maybe he has a grudge towards Iowa State since Mac was fired. It just goes back to the same old thing that Iowa State doesn't get that much national respect and hopefully Coach Chizik can build the program up to a level were it will command respect.

So let me ask you guys this, if you were writing that piece instead of Dienhart, what would you list as positives about the Chizik hire?
Good recruiter? No question about it. However, having coaches who are execellent recruiters isn't a luxury anymore, it's a must have in this day and age of big time college football.
Great defensive coach? No question about it.
Championship Experience? No question about it.
One of the things I found ironic in the Chizik blurb is that Dienhart bought up the tendency of Chizik to move around alot, after all this will be Chizik's 4th stop since 2001 (Central Fl., Auburn, Texas, and now Iowa St.).
Correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't "job jumping" on the list of your negatives regarding Jay Norvell?
I'm sure my last question will open a can of worms, but I found it ironic that Dienhart would question "job jumping" when you guys were doing the same thing during the Norvell interview.
Regardless of who was going to be named HC at Iowa St., the new guy is going to have weapons on offense (Meyer, Blythe, etc.) to work with, something that most new head coaches don't have the luxury of when they arrive at their new school. Garn, I don't object to the things he says about Chizik. I object to how he states that ISU should have grabbed Kelly. Seriously, if we take Kelly, how excited are our fans despite his HC experience? Probably not very. With Chizik, fans are excited.
And don't even bring up Norvell. No one wanted him. Not Pollard, not the fans, and not the donors.

Re: TSN's Dienhart ranks this year's coaching hires
why dont we let the recruits do the talking...
ISU-20 total, 1 four star, 8 three star, 11 two star=avg star 2.50
Cinci-23 total, 6 three star, 17 two star=avg star 2.26

you're on the right track...the point is, none of these coaches have done anything for their new teams as far as on the field accomplishments go, so the only thing we can compare is recruiting so far...which still has a lot of flaws (star ratings are garbage and different programs attract different recruits, it's more about what you DO with the recruits that makes you a good coach). it does sound like dienhart has some sour grapes but the truth is, no one knows who will be a huge success or a huge flop. i realize it's just fun to predict things, but the fact of the matter is, no one has enough information so far to get any sort of judgment on who is a better hire...just ask the Hawk fans who wanted Stoops when a guy out of nowhere was hired by the name of Ferentz.

Re: TSN's Dienhart ranks this year's coaching hires
I have a feeling if Bama snagged Chizik, the media would be all over the news, and Chizik would be in the top 5 on that list.

Re: TSN's Dienhart ranks this year's coaching hires
This guy really needs to start reading something other than the back of cereal boxes. He goes on and on about how ISU should be lucky to find anybody that wants the job, then he bags on us for passing by several of his somehow higher ranked candidates for an assistant with the national champions?
Iowa State's goal is to not be competing for Big XII North titles every few years but rather Big XII titles every year. Sometimes you have to go past the surface and name to judge coaches on what they know, who they know, where they were mentored, the recruiting trails they've worked and the hype they'll create. Nobody on that list comes out with a higher score than Chizik when you look at the key needs for our program.
Here's why Chizik was hired...
Learned under a great HC
Has been with the Big XII champs
Creates hype from fans
Knows the big-time recruiting trails
Demands integrity & success
And most importantly - Knows how to win championships in the Big XII
While this crack-head can say we passed up great prospects, none have been around the type of success that Iowa State desires. The others created success with lesser programs but they brought them to a level comparable to Iowa State of the early decade. We're past that and we want something more. Chizik won't settle for anything other than success, it's in his blood, it's what he knows.
A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player. -
Re: TSN's Dienhart ranks this year's coaching hires
Relax. Who cares? I could care less about this article. Why does anyone need validation from this guy anyway as to who ISU has as a coach. If you are happy with GC then that is all that matters. Someone had to be put
in the 11th spot. It does not take away any thing from ISU or GC. It is what it is, whipe your ***** with it. Time will tell.

He was one of the guys that said, we can never do better than the Houston Bowl. Another of the guys that the previous coach went out of his way to talk to for the sake of publicity (the whole selling argument again). I have a feeling that as we go along, the stories written about the football program will be about the program, which, after the past twelve years, will be a pleasant change.
I also believe that the stories for now will be more along these lines, but if (when) we start winning, then they will change. It will be nice not to have to sift through facilities, budget, etc. to get to the real story.

Re: TSN's Dienhart ranks this year's coaching hires
His whole argument is that he does not think Chizik will stay in Ames. We will have to see, if he is successful here we will all be happy and if he does leave we will be in a better position.

Re: TSN's Dienhart ranks this year's coaching hires
Dienhart does touch on the biggest unknown for me and that is recruiting. Chizik has never been one place long enough to coach his own recruits.
He may be a great recruiter - I certainly hope so. There is no way to gauge that, however by looking at his won-loss record as an assistant coach because he was mostly coaching players that other people recruited before him.
-
Re: TSN's Dienhart ranks this year's coaching hires
I agree to a certain extent but you have to remember that so much of the actual day-to-day coaching and training is done by assistants. The head coach makes the global decisions while the assistants and staff do the grooming and fundamentals. Now obviously you want a head coach that's hands-on but they're more of the icon for recruits and global instructor of the program whereas the assistants do a lot of the work that makes the difference in how an athlete grows. That to me is why Jamie increased the assistant's pay so much along with the coach's. In my opinion anyways.
A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player. -
