Coming Attractions: Iowa State
Greg Powers
SuperPrep.com Feb 7, 2007
Iowa State has had a solid year on the recruiting trail, and they have reeled in a few big fish. In this Scout.com recruiting feature, Analyst Greg Powers, takes a look at some of the schools most prolific signees.
New Head Coach Gene Chizik had his work cut out for himself, but managed to put together a solid group of commitments for National Signing Day. The class was heavy with junior college players that hope to make an immediate impact with the Cyclones. It will be interesting to see what he and his staff can do with a whole year under their belts as we turn the page to the 2008 recruiting class.
Big Four:
RB Jamicah Bass (El Camino Junior College)- At 6-foot-0, 215-pounds, Bass has an interesting recruiting story to tell after he gets done with football. He committed to Iowa State twice in the process, and it is a good thing for the Cyclones running back depth chart. With a self reported 4.36 forty-yard dash time, and a body that looks like it chiseled from granite, I would look for Bass to have a big off season and position himself for the fall.
SLB Fabian Brown (Roosevelt HS, Iowa)- At 6-foot-3, 225-pounds look for Brown to possibly make the move down to defensive end. He has a nice frame that looks like he could add some real mass in a college conditioning program. Iowa State needs to show that they can recruit the state of Iowa, and recruit it well. It is a good thing that they did not get shut out in-state this year.
QB Phillip Bates (Omaha North HS, Nebraska)- The 6-foot-2, 200-pound signal caller has come full circle with the Cyclones. He was the first commit of the class when he chose to attend Iowa State over an offer from Nebraska. Many schools pursued him after the coaching change, but he decided to be a man of his word stick with his original commitment. A value that often goes overlooked in this day and age.
DT Jerrod Black (Cypress Falls HS, Texas)- Black was a very hotly contested player down the stretch. He racked up offers from Missouri, Arizona and Houston. Many top programs were sniffing around his trail all season long. He is a versatile big man that has played for one of the most successful programs in Texas. He will bring a winning attitude in to a program that need to be re-energized.
Sleeper:
WR Alex Sandvig (Valley HS, Iowa)- In a year that is stuffed full of JUCO players, why not take a chance on picking a player that has virtually gone completely under the radar. He will follow his brothers path to Iowa State, but the younger brother always has that drive to do the extra work to make themselves better than the older brother. They have something to prove. Will Alex have that drive?
