Cowboys to hire Wade Phillips

Looks like the recycling of another failed coach. It's surprising to me that Jones would go that route.

I guess everyone was right as it pretty much came down to him or Norv Turner.

Great D Coordinator, but a terrible coach. Believe me, I had to sit through some bad years when he was the coach in Buffalo.
Maybe he'll set the Cowboys back a few years. I don't ree anyhting wrong with that.

I don't know, I think the hire makes sense. Phillips runs pretty much the same 3-4 defense that the Cowboys run. Just make sure he doesn't have much say in the offense, and it might be alright.

The hire makes sense from a defensive standpoint...as already noted. So that clearly says to me this offense is Jason Garrett's to run basically by himself. Tough task for a guy with just a couple years of QB coaching experience and T.O. to deal with.

It's a strange hire, not a big splash by any means. Yet what named guys were out there right now? Cowher is about the only one and he's not coming back for at least a year. I would've supported getting Rivera, yet there is the feeling that defense doesn't belong to him - just as the Dallas defense didn't really belong to Zimmer.

I'm not thrilled with the hire yet I'm not upset with it either. It's just ok. I wouldn't want to be Phillips though. Jones is on record many times in saying he wants Jason Garrett to be the head coach someday - and they toyed with him being such now. So the first sign of trouble and if I'm Phillips, knowing the heir is already in town - I'm getting a bit nervous.

I'm interested to see how Dallas fills out the rest of the staff - because as we know from experience - that's the real key.

Kind of like Iowa State hiring Brian Kelly...I wouldn't have been thrilled but not upset either.

You may be right about Rivera...which would explain why he hasn't gotten a HC job yet.

Make no mistake, Jerry Jones is the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He just needed another puppet so he could continue to meddle. I can't believe Parcells put up with Jerry for as long as he did.

Right.

What's nice about the NFL, unlike college - fans are not as concerned with making huge splashes when hiring coaches. The coaches typically don't sell the tickets - players do. And when you can go get players via free agency, trade and the draft that make splashes - coaching hires seem to come after that in importance to the fans.

So Jerry could make a Brian Kelly type hire and still be ok as far as the fan base is concerned. Yes, there are Cowboy fans already saying they're going to turn in their garb and other idiotic things - yet they'll be wearing it when the draft comes around - we all know that. And they'll definitely be in the stadium come game time.

That could very well be the biggest downside of this hire. Jerry gets a guy that hasn't exactly been a great head coach. He also has his golden boy, Jason Garrett, waiting in the wings. Not to mention, his ill-tempered wide receiver is still in Big D.

Ick.

I really thought Jerry learned quite a bit from running Jimmy out of town and what happened to the franchise after that. Hiring BP was a big step in the right direction for him. This hire could very well be a step or two back in the wrong direction.

HE just isn't a head coach, I hope it works out for him, but he has never proven, in the 2/3 head coaching jobs he has had before, that he has that ability. The recycling is ridiculous, but a better choice that Norv Turner, that is for sure. At least it aint Wannstedt, he is the opitamy of a poor head coach!
