I'm sure things loosen up a bit as a coach has been there a while and especially after experiencing some success. My point is, that this alone will help, but it's not a major factor, IMO. Mac did the exact same things and we went 3-8, 2-9, 1-10 in his first 3 years. Actually, the great coaches never "loosen up a bit"...they actually bear down even more after "experiencing some success" because they know that the natural human tendency of most players (and of most people) is to sit back in revel in success once achieved.
Great coaches are able to overcome this natural tendency with focus and discipline.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -

Yep, I've said the same thing on this board before. This is the model followed by most new coaching staffs. Mac did the same exact thing.
There was nothing wrong with ISU's conditioning in the Mac era. There were problems with conservative coaching, poor game day management, and poor personnel decisions.
I like Mac, but he lost this team and he would never realize his conservative approach just will not work at ISU. ISU can't win with talent alone.
When Loney was around, ISU was very unpredictable on offense because Mac pretty much let Loney do his thing.
I hope the team I see on the field is well coached and "hard nosed." These coaches will make or break the team based on their ability to make personnel decisions, their ability to motivate players and their ability to teach.

Right on target. Here's one of my favorite ( ) quotes from last season regarding Ryan Baum's switch to defense. I'd hate to see how a good O-coordinator could pick it apart.
"Baum worked Saturday with ISU's second-team defense. It was his third day at a position he hasn't worked since doing it at Gilbert High School. "Once you get the base stuff it's a simple defense," Baum said. "It's been a lot easier to pick up than I thought it was going to be.""

Re: "It's been tough" - Good!!
Judging by the talk of brutal conditioning sessions, toughness, swagger and the size of recruits we seem to be bringing it, it seems to me that we might not be beating too awful many teams this year, but we are going to make them pay for it in the morning. I hope we become one of those teams that other teams hate to play cuz they know they are gonna get a war and be sore for a week. The wins will come soon enough if we develop like that.

i wonder where gable learned to get someone in shape. couldn't be related to a former mentor of mine and gables named coach harold nichols???? nichols made damn certain you were in shape. you didn't not need a weight coach or a track speed coach when coach nick was around. i suppose gable picked up a few of coach nichols regimens by being coached by one of the great iowa state wrestling coaches named DR HAROLD NICHOLS!!!!!!!!

So, woodie, have you ever done "Bridges"?
I started doing them when I heard they were a Gable/Nichols staple strength and conditioning exercise.
