Isu Outspends Iowa on recruiting

Interesting. I see Iowa has another top 25 class in recruiting but spent less money than ISU on recruiting. I beleive the numbers are from 2006. Link below.

FYI...to my knowledge none of the major recruiting services ranked Iowa's class as high as 25.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

You can afford to spend a little more on recruiting when you aren't paying $3 million for your head football coach.

There's a storm brewin', and it's named Cyclone Gene.

In state recruiting is also a lot cheaper than out of state recruiting.

I think the Rag had an article the other day how Chizik still hasn't even unpacked the boxes in his office yet and all but 1 coach is still living in an extended stay hotel as they basically spend most of the time since being hired on the recruiting trail.

Remember this is for the entire athletic dept. It is not limited to just football recruiting.

Re: Isu Outspends Iowa on recruiting

Iowa pretty much had the State of Iowa recuited when Chizik arrived on board. I think thier class included 8 or 9 Iowa boys? Obviously, it is ALOT cheeper to recruit in state then it is in the deep south, which is where Chizik got alot of his men. I am guessing with the way Chizik was able to lure a few recruits in this class, in the next few years, we will spend alot less then Iowa has too!

This is not a cost factor I would care to monitor closely. Winners don't go with the low bid. Our coaches have to go where and when they think it will do the most good - and it is a year round activity. Signees are often reported to say they signed with the coach that was there early and often. Lincoln airport security reported that Tom Osborn was the most frequent flyer when he was coach - far more often than Solich. It was reported that Doc Sadler went to Australia to keep Maric on the NU MBB team. A good investment - I'm not sure which column the bean counters put that in.

Why not us?

Re: Isu Outspends Iowa on recruiting

I went to the Iowa site and counted 6 signees from the state of Iowa. Seems like they've been getting a lot of guys from Illinois and Ohio in recent years, not to mention the usual Florida and Texas players that every school goes after.

I would guess the reputation of the school has something to do with the money spent as well. If a guy has scholarships from Texas, Nebraska, Iowa and Iowa State on the table, were going to have to spend alot more time and money trying to woo him away from the more prominent programs.

Re: Isu Outspends Iowa on recruiting

The results are for fiscal year 2006 which I assume is a calander year, but I'm not sure. In any case the time period involves lots of coaching changes at ISU - football, MBB, gymnastics, wrestling. This impacts recruiting costs as often the old staffs had already spent money in addition to the new staffs having to make up for lost ground by scrambling to land their own targets.

Re: Isu Outspends Iowa on recruiting

All Texas has to do is call the kids home from the office and make an offer. GC even said recruiting Texas is alot different than ISU. Basically in Texas you just make an offer and most of the time the kid accepts. Done deal, and cheap!

This is a really dumb article written by a really dumb writer for a really dumb Hawkeye rag.

They are referring to the Fiscal Year 2006 which I'm assuming is July 1, 2005 to July 1, 2006. It also is recruiting for ALL athletics, not just football. No figures were given for just ISU football.

Typical fine Gazette reporting.....
