McDermott Coaching Style

I wonder if McDermott feels he HAS to play all these players, sometimes going 10 guys deep in his lineup. When he was at UNI, he had a solid nucleus of 7 guys that would see all the minutes. I understand guys like Ceasar play good defense and provide a spark but you can't win games if you don't outscore the other team with some offense. I also understand guys get in foul trouble like today with Clark and Taylor. Anybody else have thoughts on this.

I think that he has to try to find combinations that work every night because he doesn't have that nucleus that you talked about. Because of this he has to shuffle players in and out trying to see what will work from game to game.

I thought he did a nice job by sitting Mike Taylor to keep him out of foul trouble in the end, then bringing him back in for offense.

I think the depth at this point is more about getting use out of the scholarships and having more fouls to give.

Very true. We have very few pure scorers which we knew going into the season.

What drives me buggy is McDermotts set plays do get guys wide open, but they miss shots! The 2000 team was very structured in offense and they would nail those shots when they were open.

I think ISU's offense is set up to score enough points to win a typical Big 12 MBB game. With a better shooting and perhaps some better shot selection, the 'Clones would have had over 70 today. I'd like to see more scoring in the paint, but ISU just doesn't have the players at this time to do that. I think the problem in this game was the first half defensive effort.

If I were a coach, my "philosophy" for the Big 12 would be to recruit and design the offense and defensive schemes to score 70, and give up 60, with the key being holding the opponent in the 60-point range. If the scheme can get it going and score 80 or 90 on a few nights, so be it. But the defense always has to be there.

Um... The 2000 team was about the most UNstructured offensive team in history. It ranks right up there with the rest of LEs teams...

I am NOT knocking LE on this. His version of basketball involved playing hard defense, rebounding, and then basic offensive ideals. He ran an offense best used in grade school. But, you know what? When Tinsley was running the show it looked incredible, something like a 58-15 record.

Hmm. Actually I would call the Wayne Morgan Era unstructured. Tim Floyds teams were super structured and Larry Eustachy was in the middle somewhere.

You're right that Tinsley was a great floor general who was a great assist leader.

I think by this time next year we will see the "nucleus" type team that Gmac is use to putting on the floor. This is a throw togethor team that he hasn't had much time to coach into his style. Once the turnovers get under control and we get a true point guard, the inside game will come around.
Man, I wish we had Texas' freshman point guard. The kid is a stud. But at least we have WJ.

I think the play of Ceaser has been exceptional and he has shown that he can shoot the ball. The only play I question is that of Brock Jacobson. I trust GM though, lead as you see fit! Go Cyclones.

Yeah, uh in 2000 nobody could guard Jamaal at the point, Nurse nailed 3s, Fizer could score wherever and whenever he wanted, Shirely was a good smart post player who could score and Stevie Johnson was a tough scorer and rebounder. Those guys weren't playing unstructured basketball, they were just so good that they made it look easy because they didn't struggle on either end of the floor.

i dont know his reasoning, but i love the fact that coach mac is playing ceaser
