I have a rat terrier named Bugs and he could jump over my 4 foot fence and was brave enough to chase deer away. They are very territorial dogs for their size and are not afraid to be the guardian of kids. He is now 15 years old, has had couple broken legs for various reasons of his own making, and therefore has built up massive chest from climbing numerous stairs relentlessly at his old age. He is also sneeky ands watches everything and loves people food instead of Old Roy or Putrina. He especially likes pizza and heaven forbid, if he finds chocolate, it is gone. He runs the house all day when it is empty and causes little problems. He is mostly low maintenance.
Hilton should make a great pet.

One of our two dogs is a rat terrier and they are great companions and family dogs. I wouldn't trade ours for anything. Good luck finding a good home, I would love to take him but two dogs is enough for us right now:)
P.S. They do have incredible jumping abilities. Ours can jump around 4 1/2 to 5 feet high standing still.

Not familiar with the breed. Not familiar with a lot of breeds at that. How big do they get?

He was great with their sons, but didn't like any other kids. Like all twelve & nine year-olds, they had friends over frequently, and Happy frequently bit them. He was outwardly friendly but would bite without any advance notice. The lady of the house put Happy down after he bit a kid in the face (probably his tenth victim)...
I might talk to them about her (friend loves Rat Terriers and they're a great family), but his Mrs. is kinda leery of the breed now...

I had a rat terrier/shorthaired collie mix when I was a growing up - best dog a boy could ever have, but don't get them around cats / birds / raccoons / woodchucks / chickens ... they were all on her list of victims.

At home my parents have a male mixed breed terrier. It is the best dog that we've ever had to us (at least now). When we first got him, we actually got 2 dogs, the other being a sheltie/terrier mix.
The two were best of friends, but ferocious to anything or anyone strange that would enter our property (5 acres in the country). They would corner and fight other dog(s) bigger than them that would stray near. They would bark and yelp at anyone coming up our driveway. Once they got to know that people were friendly to their owners, they didn't mind them so much.
Sadly, the sheltie/terrier mix was run over in an attempt to catch a truck he was chasing and died. Our current dog was devastated, sitting at the top of our driveway just staring down at the road where his friend laid. Ever since then, he has not been the super-hyper ferocious dog that he and his old partner had once been. He is now very calm around people and very friendly. He will still bark every once in a while when a strange vehicle comes up our driveway, and he will try to kill any raccoons or possums that he finds and chases away any stray dogs. He does not mind cats at all, even skunks (we have frequent visitors), as he has probably already learned a lesson about them.
He is now a great dog and I wish I could have a dog like him at school, but I can't. I hope he is around for many more years to come.

Ten bites of children before they put the mutt down? What is wrong with people. I have a yellow lab that I really like, but if he ever bites a kid who's over just over playing, he's going down fast.
