My little brother who plays on the Ames High Hockey team just told me that the ISU hockey team voted 24-0 to remove Murdoch from coaching duties after the year. He said since its a club team, they could do that. He said he talked to one of his coaches that also plays for Murdoch. If this is true, I'm stunned....but I do know most people don't like playing for him from hockey players I've met. Keep in mind this is not meant to be a rumor and I have no proof as of now, but just wanted to pass along what I heard to see if anyone else heard something about it.

they win the conference title, then decide to remove him as coach seems like a bit of a strech

Read again, I was asking in case anyone else heard it. I am skeptical too, but just making sure.

Calm down, Bobber. There's no reason to jump all over the guy. He heard something from someone with a decent connection to the Cyclone team, and wanted to know if the same information had turned up anywhere else. There's no harm in that. He's not starting a rumor- if he was, he would have worded it as fact, not as skeptical hearsay.
It's very surprising to hear or even think about something like that happening. I'm certainly not familiar with the dynamics of the hockey team, but I have a tough time fathoming being involved a unanimous removal of a coach that has taken my program to such a high level nationally. Even if he is a jerk (which I know nothing about; that's the first I've heard about it), you would have to decide between having a nice-guy coach and being on a team that performs highly and wins consistently. If Murdoch goes, the program takes a HUGE hit. That would be a grievous injury to overcome...

Ok.....well I brought it up on CF because its a good community with great sources. Rather than me verbally talk to a lot of cyclone fans "spreading the rumor" as you call it, I could simply ask online to see if anyone else has heard it. I do hope its still okay to ask questions on here...

I too have heard this from an ice hockey intramural supervisor. I heard this last Monday or so. So IF they did vote him off it was before the win today. Does anyone else have a credible source about this topic?

If you don't know the dynamics of the team, how would you know it would take a HUGE hit if he's gone. My brother told me that 3-5 great hockey players a year don't come to ISU for the sole reason of hating Murdoch. My parents are home away from home ISU hockey parents. We take players out to eat as a family. Trust me, they don't like Murdoch. Again, I'm not saying what I heard is true yet, I'm just saying its possible. Thats why I was asking

I grew up playing hockey in Ames. Murdoch is one of those guys, everyone knows he is a good coach, but no one can stand to be around him.

Not everybody is going to be a nice guy like Dan McCarney. Murdoch wins without cheating (from what I can tell), isn't that what he was hired for and is paid to do?
Sure, I'd prefer a likable coach. Yet if I have to choose between a guy that wins and people may not like or a guy not winning but people love...
I'll take the winner.

He got canned from an ISU day job for selling insurance from his office....

This doesn't surprise me that much. It may not be just the fact that he is not well liked, but it could be that he is a sleezeball. I recall a controversy regarding mens hockey accounting a while back that just about got them defunded by GSB (we cut them down to $10,000 that year to "send a message"). I think the general consensus was that Murdoch was essentially stealing money from the team, but no one could prove it. It is a club team and he supposedly volunteers his time. The idea was floated to require getting rid of him in order to recieve funding, but it never garnered much support, as from what I understood he had a lot of player support.

Could he be like Dan Hawkins and say if you cannot play all year round, go to intramurals?

I view coaches like my doctor.
I would much rather have a really smart Doctor that is good at what they do, instead of a Doctor that is a really nice guy...
