Barry was the guy who started Hilton Magic for me.

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative. ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other." -

Re: Sad news....Barry Stevens dies
Wow, don't even know what to say. Best wishes to his family, he will be missed. :(

Re: Sad news....Barry Stevens dies
Sad day indeed. Barry helped Johnny Orr put the Cyclones on the map! He was one of the all time greats, definitely in the same circle as Hornacek, Grayer, and Hoiberg, though few fans think of him when counting the greats.

My heart just sank.............Barry was one of my all-time favorites. I don't know how many hours I spent in my driveway as a kid shooting deep shots from the baseline like my hero. Pete, Ennis, Dexter Green, now Barry. I'm just at a loss.

Sympathy to his friends and family. And he has a large cyclone family.
I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone. -
Re: Sad news....Barry Stevens dies
Wow, this is shocking.
Barry was a fantastic player! If they had the three point line when he played he would have scored significantly more points in his career. The guy could fill it up from downtown!
I always loved his hair...he had a very pronounced "widow's peak".
I still remember the chants of "BARRY - BARRY - BARRY" during his last home game...a home Big 8 tournament contest versus Colorado as I recall. He was smoking hot from downtown that afternoon!
All my best to his family!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -
Re: Sad news....Barry Stevens dies
That's a shocker, he was the first really bigger named player that Johnny Orr was able to bring. During the Orr era is was names such a as Stevens, Grayer, Hornacek, and Big Vic. that always will stand out. It's a sad day for ISU and all the fans.

Re: Sad news....Barry Stevens dies
RIP, Barry... Way too young...
I've seen many Cyclone hoopsters and Barry was and always will be my favorite. As somebody else noted, Barry was the first significant Orr recruit and he almost single-handedly delivered Jeff Grayer, Gary Thompkins, etc.
My freshman year (Barry's sophomore), ISU played a double-overtime thriller against Minnesota, which featured Trent Tucker and Randy Breuer. I will always believe that was the turning-point for the Orr program and Barry was unconscious from the deep left corner that evening.
I had always hoped that Barry could return to ISU in some capacity; I know he and Grayer checked into the possibility before Wayne's hiring...
