Re: MLB: Best division?

GO TWINS!!!

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

So you're telling me the NL West is the best division because they have Barry Bonds and they will be shown on TV a lot. That doesn't make any sense. The last time I checked the strength of a division is based on the overall records of the teams in the division, and the player talent on these teams.

While I agree the NL East is going to be tough, I disagree that the Mets are the only reason. The Mets, may be one of the scariest lineups to pitch against, but the reverse is they only have 1 decent starting pitcher (for sure). I believe, the Phillies are stacked, the Marlins are young and scary, the Braves are much improved, and the Nationals... well we'll give them another year.

as much as I hate to say, the toughest is probably the AL Central. Screw the twins.

Seriously, the twins have the best catcher, first basemen and pitcher in the league and a top 5 center fielder..........and they dont blow millions like the idiot yankees do

Remember that stressed spelled backwards is desserts!

Re: MLB: Best division?

AL central with the NL east close behind.

Twins win the central by 4 games. White Sox or Indians win the wild card as Detroit falls off this year.

Braves get back to their ways and win the NL East in a barn burner.

Well, pitchers and cathers have reported. Spring training is getting geared up. It can mean only one thing.....my Pirates have officially been eliminated from playoff contention.

Re: MLB: Best division?

Why the NL West hate? Take away their playoff spot and give it to the AL? Did you forget that the NL West had 2 teams make the playoffs last year? The Padres won the West and the Dodgers won the wild card. Granted, neither team won their divisional playoff matchup, but they made the playoffs. That being said, I think the AL Central is the deepest and best division, but I don't see any AL Central teams winning it all. The NL West might not be the best division, but I'd look out for the Dodgers and Padres. I'm biased because I'm a huge Dodger fan, but having a rotation with guys like Lowe, Penny, Schmidt, and Wolf is pretty decent. Plus they have one of the deepest bullpens in the National League, if not the entire league. Their only question mark is hitting. They don't have a power hitter, but I'd look for a trade for a big bat sometime in the year since they have 8 solid starting pitchers on their roster, 3 of which could be trade bait.

Re: MLB: Best division?

I don't know how anyone voted for a division in the NL with a straight face. Winning the NL is like being the shortest midget.

No doubt it is the AL Central, which is kind of funny, because just a few years ago it was an absolutely terrible division.

It's hilarious that the NL Central is currently in second place. Now I'm a huge Cubs fan, but I'm not stupid enough to pick their division as the best. Last year the division was flat out awful. The AL Central is hands down the best division in baseball, while the NL Central is likely the "favorite" division of our voters. (and the Cubs are obviously the favorite team, jea!)

Re: MLB: Best division?

Anyone here listen to Ump's Eye View on KXnO occasionally? MLB umpires Tim McClelland and Eric Cooper host the show and they ran down each division last night. They picked the Cubs the Cubs to win the Central because the Cards pitching looks very shakey right now. They say because of Pujols it's a team that could either win 100 games or lose 95, depending on how that pitching holds up and how much weight Pujols has to carry to get wins. I have to agree, that rotation is not going to scare anyone:

Carpenter: only ace on the staff, only guy you can count on every start
Kip Wells: Career 57-74 pitcher with a 4.46 ERA. Last time his ERA was under 5.00 was 2004 at 4.55 and only winning season as a starter was 2003 with a 10-9 record.
Anthony Reyes: good young kid that showed some flashes but his ERA ballooned after June. has the talent to be a good middle of rotation pitcher possibly
Adam Wainwright: After how he performed as the closer and with Isrignhausen's injury questions and control problems last year I don't know why they just don't leave this kid as the closer and get another starter. He started zero games last year so will be interesting how he transistions to being a starter but he does have some good stuff
Brad Thompson: another guy with no career starts in the big league. I don't know much on him.

Maybe I'll be surprised and this group does well but this looks a little like the patchwork kind of rotation that the Cubs tried going with last season with a bunch of young guys and an ace and hoping an injured starter (Mulder) comes back healthy at some point. Cards lost 3 of their 5 starters and biggest signings were Kip Wells and Adam Kennedy. Both the Cubs and Astros had active offseasons so I can't see the Cards running away with the division if they do indeed find a way to win it again. The young and talented Brewers team could also be a darkhorse as well to challenge in the NL central.

COOP!!! Got his start at the ISU intramural fields...just a little trivia for all of you. Way to recognize the ISU guy who doesn't get noticed much by our school... (maybe he didn't grad or something, I don't know.)

Interestingly enough, just today in the ISU Daily they had an article in the sports section about Eric Cooper and his journey to the bigs.
