Sorry but the reality is that we need to boost attendance by any means necessary. It's sad but true.

Re: Home opener Thursday Aug. 30
I don't think that many ISU fans would not show just b/c of labor day weekend. I come to every game from KC and took friday off this last year so I could get to the first game. I don't think i will be able to do that again, so I think this sux.

Re: Home opener Thursday Aug. 30
Well I would have hated to see the attendance at the Toledo game last year then if it would have been on a Saturday. Let me tell you it was nothing to write home about by moving it to Thursday. I was expecting sellout with the move to a night game, Thursday (so students could attend before holiday break), and 1st game of the year with a VERY hyped FB team. With all that going for it, I would have expected 50K and instead I think ACTUAL attendance (not tickets sold) was probably around 42K.

Re: Home opener Thursday Aug. 30
I wish it would be on Friday instead of Thursday it would still work for a long weekend and easier for people who are working. I don't think it will interfere with HS football that starts the next week which is what a lot of people don't like about Friday night games.

Great For the Students, bad for out of towners..........
If you read the article it is actually being done for the students, and that is fine, but with the financial changes being put on the shoulders of the non-student season tickets holders, this is not a good move for them. They have now paid a higher price for a game they can not attend. I will be there either way, I live local, but I already know of 6 season ticket holders who will not be there.

Re: Home opener Thursday Aug. 30
it's just very difficult for people who have to travel to make it to these thursday games. Whatever you gain by moving it away from labor day weekend, you lose in traveling fans who can't make it.
it's just annoying.

Re: Home opener Thursday Aug. 30
I don't know if this helps but here are some numbers. UNI should be a sellout every year so you really shouldn't look at those 2 games.
Aug 31 2006(thu) Toledo ATTENDANCE: 42,531
Sept 3 2005(Sat) Ill State ATTENDANCE: 44,058 Sep 5 Labor Day
Sept 4 2004(Sat) UNI ATTENDANCE: 42,865 Sep 6 Labor Day
Aug 30 2003(Sat) UNI ATTENDANCE: 48,088 Sep 1 Labor Day

Re: Home opener Thursday Aug. 30
As a student, I love the Thursday night games since it does get the weekend started off right. Wednesday becomes Thirsty Thursday! I will say that students need to quit crying about classes on Friday. I can understand the classes after 5 pm on Thursday, but for God sakes go to class on Friday. You're the one paying for it! I also feel for the ones footing the bill (non students.) You guys are the ones who make it possible so maybe the Thursday games are a bad idea.
As for the poster who asked about Iowa being a night game:
This would be a great thing to do, like in 2002 at Kinnick. I would only want this scenario if we would be guaranteed national tv slots on ESPN because they usually save the high-interest matchups for Saturday night. Any game under the lights is always fun and allows for more sleep and drinking time.

With all of the talk about this I have to feel some relief that we don't live in an NFL market. I mean there is a chance that we would be talking about a Sunday night game or GASP a Monday night game. I can't imagine the chaos that those games cause for fanbases. I have to refer to the west for a good quote on this one.
"It's Division I football! It's the Big 12! It ain't intramurals!"
Weve got 6 months to plan for this event. This is an event. GC's first game, if you have 1 extra day of vacation this is a great use of that vacation day. If you do not or it doesn't work out then you just have to deal with being part of the minority that won't be able to attend. It sucks for some but is a party and atmosphere that most cannot wait for.

The students should suck it up and quit running home to mommy so she can coddle them and do their laundry every time they get a 3-day weekend.

Sorry, I had to do it. Begin 26 seconds in.
Are we seriously going to complain about this? This is the Iowa State football home opener. They could play the game at 2:38 AM on a Tuesday morning and I you wouldn't here a bad thing come out of my mouth. Sack up, go to the game, have fun, and cheer on a Cyclone W.

Re: Home opener Thursday Aug. 30
Hee is my theory.
ISU fans, just like other middle of the road teams, looks at games a little different then fans with winning traditions.
ISU fans expect the game day to be perfect because "they've been season ticket holders for 20 years even when the team sucked". A lot of us feel like ISU is just lucky we bought season tickets and they better do what we like or were not going to buy them next year.
I know some OU fans and it's funny how different they see things. Not only are their season tickets higher but they also pay over $1,000 a year just to keep those tickets. They know that if they don't pay them that someone else will come along and snag them up. They complain just like us but not about the same things. They also don't act like OU owes them something.
It's not that OU fans are better it's just that they are use to winning and the sacrifices you have to make.
I'm getting a little off topic but it's funny how inflexible some fans are. If you come from out of state I understand but very few people in Iowa should have a problem getting to the game.

Most students who go home just spent three months with mommy and daddy for the summer. It's sad but kids today are becoming more and more dependant on parents. Not to go off on a tanget or anything, but I've heard of parents calling professors, coming to Ames to do laundry/clean the dorm room, and call thier kids 2-3 times a day.
