Just because it's harder to get in to doesn't mean it's better. It may be but that's not the reason.

It's funny, everytime I hear him coming on to Miller's show, I kinda roll my eyes just out of habit. But he's really alot better to listen to now. Not exactly impartial, but pretty fair. During Jon's little hissy-fit over the Iowa game ticket coup, I found myself agreeing with Zabel, far more than Miller.

Interesting on the band perspective. I grew up in Illinois with my pre-ISU memories mainly in the 70s. Didn't know anything about Iowa or ISU. We were flooded with Big 10 and Notre Dame coverage, and Iowa sucked in football so I didn't know much about them outside of wrestling tradition. Then I spent four years in the marching band from 85-88. Had to attend every game, rain or shine, and watch Iowa beat the **** out of us outside of the s!@& burger we almost made them eat in Kinnick in '88. The team and fans were anything but gracious winners. No class, loud and obnoxious. Nothing like sitting there cold, wet and freezing while an endless parade of Iowa fans walk by the band at Jack Trice doing their best to rub it in ('85). Too bad they couldn't have treated us with the class that the OU fans did later that year on our Big 8 road trip.

I thought he was talking about Michigan (UM) and not Mizzou (MU). I could be wrong, though. I just know it's that Michigan is UM and Mizzou is MU.

Re: Source of hatred towards the Hawks

    Grew up an Iowa fan.

Went to Iowa State strictly due to educational purposes.

Gradutated from Iowa State with my formal education complete.

Still didn't loathe Iowa and would actually root for them when they weren't playing ISU.

Attained my "real" education the following year when I attended the Iowa/Iowa State game in Kinnick with my brother-in-law (at the time, an MBA student at Iowa) and my wife (a Nebraska grad.)

The entire section around us picked up on our not cheering when an Iowa State player was injured. We were immediately "interrogated," discovered as "non-Hawks" and proptly riduculed the rest of the entire game.

No need to discuss specifics, just that I've never experienced more rude, rotton, no-good, foul-mouthed, immature, heartless, ignorant, unintelligent, uneducated, ignorant, demeaning fans than those Iowa fans.

Hallelujah. Holy ****. Where's the Tylenol...

Re: Source of hatred towards the Hawks

I grew up in northeast Iowa. KWWL of Waterloo was the TV station we listened to, so grew up being force fed Hawks coverage from the beginning. But the arrogance of their fans is what lead me to hate them. One Iowa fan in our hometown berated me for attending ISU, telling me how inferior that ISU was to Iowa. This was in the early 80's, so at that time Iowa's football and basketball teams were dominating any head to head matchups. When I explained that the success or failure of the athletic department wasn't the reason to attend an University, it was then explained to me that not only was Iowa superior athletically, that they were superior in every academic way also. That's when their fans arrogance really showed through to me.

I've been an Iowa hater ever since.

Simple.........grew up in Linn County, most of family went to EIU. Was forced to go to Rose Bowl game in 1959, all the way to California in the back of a Dodge Station wagon with 3 siblings. Never recovered emotionally.....became a Hawk hater early in life. Frankly hating the Hawks has served me well over my 55 years.........

Missouri-Rolla, it's the second hardest public university in the country to get addmitted to. The hardest being Georgia Tech. You major in engineering or you don't go there. When I tried to get in 9 years ago the average ACT score for incoming freshmen was somewhere between a 28-30 as I recall. I think the avg GPA of incoming transfers was like a 3.1 or something. Columbia also has engineering but it's like going to EIU for engineering so it's nothing to brag about.

After going to ISU it makes me wish I would have worked harder to I could have gone someplace else. In my opinion my major (Mech. E) was basicly ran in the to ground by the chairperson we had (Judy Vance). The only usefull classes I took were from the Engineering Mechanics department. But that's another topic for another time.

Oh and the UM/MU thing is complicated If you go to Columbia It's either MU or UM-C The rest are UM-R (Rolla), UM-KC and UM-St Louis.

Re: Source of hatred towards the Hawks

Even though I grew up in eastern Iowa, 35 minutes from the Johnson County landfill (Iowa ******), I NEVER liked the Hawks. Although I do have to admit I've seen more games in Kinnick than the Jack. That's because in high school, all my Hawk loving friends and I would motor on over and plunk down $2 for a "knot hole" seat in the south ends zone. Of course, I had the same two favorite teams back then...ISU and whoever was playing the Hacks. You can't believe how many Red, Navy, Green, Purple, and Orange t-shirts I acquired going to those games. Nothing like seeing the homers get hammered on a nice sunny fall day, then listening to 'em whine on the way out the gates during the third quarter. Dang, I miss those days!!! (Ray Nagel and Frank Laterbur, where are you when we need you?)...

Re: Source of hatred towards the Hawks

When I was 8, me and my dad went to the Iowa/Michigan (Go Blue!) match-up in Kinnick. He's a HS football coach, so he can get some sweet tix to University games. Anyways, the Hawks get drilled by Michigan, and I said how cool Michigan was (my second love starting to blossom), and some Hawk fan yelled at me for liking the "wrong team." I'm sorry, but berating an 8 year old isn't really the best way to gain friends.
