I sifted through the archives and found some polls that were created very early in the season and before/during conference play. Should be ful to look back and see what the majority thought compared to what has happened. Each of the items below are links to these polls. Favorite Newcomer (Favorite newcomer of ISU men's bball team?) (Non-conference game predictions) Non-Conference Predictions (after 4 games) (Non-conference game predictions) (Conference season is upon us!) Conference Predictions (before conference play) (Conference season is upon us!) Conference Predictions (after starting 2-0) (New Conference Record Predictions)
----------------------------------------------------------------
Wesley Johnson won over 50% of the vote for favorite newcomer and I think that's still the case. Even though his play has slipped in recent weeks, the fans still seem to love him and expect big things from him. IMO, not only is he the fav. newcomer, he's going to be our best/most important.
For non-conference wins, the majority (28.1%) expected 11 wins. Next was 12 wins (25%), 10 wins (21.8%) and 9 (13.18). 9 ended up being our non-conference win total. Losing all 3 in-state games likely caught many fans off-guard.
In looking at the two conference win polls, the majority voted for 6 wins (33.74%) before conference play started and that shifted to 8 wins (35.2%) after the 2-0 start. This is why I keep talking about the false hope that was generated from the first 2 games (plus the OT loss to Kansas). In reality, the first poll was much more accurate as to what this team could yield and will be dead on if they can win 1 of the final 2 games.

Damn I'm good at starting polls....ISUfan, I think the first and fourth link you gave go to the same poll.
Also, I thought we only had 9 non conference wins this year

ESPN has us listed at 14-14 and we've won 5 Big 12 games. So, 14 minus 5 equals 11. I know some calculate our non-conference games differently, I just went with what ESPN had.

Are you being funny or serious? I'm really confused...

Hell...it's Monday...I was looking at something else while I was doing this.
You're absolutely correct - 9 non-conference wins.

I don't think "false hope" is the phrase that describes our first 3 conference games. I think we were playing our best basketball and have just slid downwards from there. Our team hit a wall halfway through the season and we just haven't rebounded since.

I was guilty of buying into some of the hype too. I voted 5-11 before the season started. After we won 2 games I expected us to lose, I moved it up to 7-9 - yet I didn't feel great about it.
And, 7-9 is still a possibility - but we're going to need to bring our A-game this week.
I just can't see how the first three games in conference play can be considered much other than creating false hope. Same thing happened against MN - many thought Taylor was a God because of that day. I was taken to the woodshed for pointing out his turnovers, even though he scored 33. Yeah, I'll take a lot of turnovers from a guy that scores 33 points - yet I knew 33 would be far from his norm. Turning the ball over a lot, hasn't been anything but the norm. Part of that goes to Mike and part to the team needing him to do too much.
Regardless, it was fun looking back to see that the majority of CF members had a pretty good line on just how this team would do this season. Not a whole lot of homerism.

This was a great idea. It is interesting to see those things again. It would be like looking at the posts from the beginning of the football season last year to the end. How many flip floppd their views, or ended up having different predictions.

Does this sound familiar? Sunday, February 27, 2005 Play in, play out ISU's seven game win streak played them into NCAA tourney contention. Sunday's loss may have played them out.
When the NCAA committee looks at the resumes of bubble teams, one of the big things are the "best wins" and "worst loss" lists. This lost to at 15-14 Nebraska team, at home, may hit the "worst loss" list.
The Cornhuskers exploited ISU's two big weaknesses: lack of depth inside, and flaky outside shooting.
By sending 4 to the offensive glass, NU got multiple chances, and also limited ISU's transition game by forcing the Cyclones to work hard for every defnsive rebound.
1-11 3 point shooting allowed the NU D to sit back and clog the middle, limiting Homan's touches and stymying penetration by the guards.
That game looked like January all over again, and ISU looked miles from being an NCAA worthy team. Even with two days off, they looked a half-step slow, and tired both physically and mentally. Even if they find a way to beat Mizzou Wednesday, I am unsure if they have enough in the tank to win in Boulder on Saturday, or to win more than their first round game in KC.
Eevn if they made the NCAA's as a 12 seed, it would take a tremendous effort to beat a 5, and effort I suspect this group doesn't have left in it.
I said this several times during the 0-5 start: Wayne's World only has one speed, and that's flat out aggressive and hustling. If ISU's 6 1/2 man rotation isn't able to do that, they are sunk.

I was close with the predictions... I went with 10 non conference wins... drake game to blame... and 7 conference wins... Colorado (nothing good rhymes with Colorado)... but we will STILL get 7 conference wins... so it's all good.
