Recent media antics....
This might explain a lot of things going on the past few weeks in the media (i.e. incessant reporting of the proposed “pointless sit-in at Kinnick” and the the antics of the Jon Miller show.) Sweeps Weeks: Radio and television stations will frequently save their best programming ideas - the biggest cliffhangers, the most outrageous stunts - as well as their promotional budgets, for "Sweeps Weeks", the four annual periods when the ratings services perform their most extensive surveying. A stunt or program that draws a bigger audience during a Sweeps Week will translate into a higher "cume" measurement for the station. Nielsen 2007 Sweeps Dates: February 2007
January 29 - February 28, 2007
May 2007
April 26 - May 23, 2007
July 2007
July 5, - August 1, 2007
November 2007
November 1 - November 28, 2007 I can't confirm that newspapers have "sweeps" can anyone else? If they do, this might explain the wrestler "on display" article that was on the front page of the DM Register. We're all just pawns... -
Re: Recent media antics....
I do not believe that newspapers have sweeps, they do have important renewal dates for big advertisers though.
Their job is to sell their product. Papers like the D M Register have to create a lot of their own buzz because, let's face it, there isn't that much going on in the state of Iowa.
So what better way to get people to read your paper, stir up some Iowa-Iowa State controversey. I am sure that it isn't hurting JP's feelings to see his program in the paper. And I am also pretty sure that Barta is happy to appear like he is taking a stand against the evil genius to the West.
BTW that does not mean that the Rag is a good paper, in fact it is a very poor one.

Smite me, oh mighty Smiter.
Sorry, but what's a sweeps post without a good line from Bruce Almighty?
Anywho...puppets we are. We should put sweeps week on the calendar so instead of falling into the media's trap - we can ignore 'em. Instead of hot rating for sweeps week, they'll fall.
Take that!

Re: Recent media antics....
Knowing Pollard, he probably orchestrated the timing of the whole $90 ticket release to coincide with the Sweeps.

Re: Recent media antics....
I credit the man with a lot. I sometimes wonder if he made the world round and water wet.
However, I'm not sure even the great and powerful Jamie Pollard is that cunning to release something during sweeps.

Re: Recent media antics....
What $90 ticket are u talking about. Is that the price of the Iowa ticket now or what

Re: Recent media antics....
I have no idea when radio ratings periods are, other than when my bosses come in and show me what the ratings were. I havent ever had any discussion with anyone here about doing anything on my show because of their being a ratings period. TV is different than radio in this regard.

Pollard is charging Iowa $90/ticket for these.
Otherwise, you can't buy a single game ticket for Iowa-ISU.

Re: Recent media antics....
Why don't we charge them something crazy like $500 or $1K a ticket?
I'm sure I heard at least a dozen times on Miller's show yesterday that that "hawkeye fans will support the team, no matter the cost." And we all know that iowa fans are the greatest fans to ever grace the face of our fine planet.

Ohhhh no....we will not fall for your "I'm innocent" ploy.
You media personalities have had us by the bit-n-pieces, but it ends here. With our swift action and cunning research, we unveiled your evil tactics in the nick of time - on the last day of sweeps. The joke's on you, Mr. Jokey!
Now please excuse me, I have a plane to track....

"Jon, are those ratings made available to the public?"
The overall station-wide numbers are released, but not demographic by demographic. There's a big difference.
