After they read the synopsis of the case, pick a side and appear to be poison to them.
for example: Dispute is over homeowner's insurance.....Tell them that you had a relative who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina and they are still waiting for settlement.
Drunk driving trial: Best friend from college was killed by a drunk driver.
The biggest detriment for you is if you appear to be open minded or have an agenda for being on the jury. If you are even remotely passionate about some facet of the case as it pertains to your life, they will strike you, quick.

The reason I got struck from the pool the one time I was asked to do Jury Duty is that I administered a highly controversial program in the Iowa Prison System. I don't think either side or the Judge wanted me after they learned of that.
