Wink Need Ammo for Watercooler Battles with Hawk Fan?

Here it is courtesy of the Iowa City Press-Citizen sports page:

http://www.press-citizen.com/apps/pb...29/1025/SPORTS

A quick sampling to engage your interest: "In the 2005-2006 U.S. Sports Academy Director's Cup, which ranks the nation's athletic programs, Iowa finished last among the Big Ten teams."

I didn't "link" it, but page 2 contains a sport-by-sport Report Card for all varsity sports at EIU. It's not pretty...

Its a good thing they have the highest paid football coach in the conference.

Wonder where Alford's salary ranks.....

Re: Need Ammo for Watercooler Battles with Hawk Fan?

I couldn't finish reading it - the whining got INCESSANT!!!

This thing could have been stopped after three paragraphs - Iowa's athletic programs aren't what they used to be; Iowa has a new AD; he plans on bringing change to the program. Instead we got 30 paragraphs of :Bohoo: covering EVERY SINGLE athletic program they have.

Us Cyclone fans have summed it up in one sentance - the Hawks suck.

And before I get negative-repped by the closet Suckeye fans on this site, I never did say that we were the kings of all of our sports. Cyclone sports is a far way from being dominant in all sports. but at least JP isn't whining about it and instead is doing something about it

true. but then again you could extend ONLY the middle finger to a hawk fan and i wouldnt care. do that at the watercooler and be sure to report back how the rest of the conversation goes.

I would take it a step further; Iowa's athletic programs never have been (other than a few widely-spaced bright shining glimmers)!!! I wish I had printed it off for future reference, but several years ago I read a big ten publication that summarized cumulative numbers of conference championships (all sports) won by the member institutions. EIU was dead last, trailing not only Northwestern but also the University of Chicago, which left the big ten in the 1920's or 1930's!!!

That's what makes "hawk fan" so galling; many of them yammer incessantly about how great their programs are when in reality they have no foundation on which to make that argument!

Well, yeah, obviously they don't have the tradtion they like to claim (although I wouldn't have told you that 10 years ago - I was on the other side of the argument ) I was just taking what was written in the article and commenting on it. But thanks for backing up my point and expanding upon it.

There were some problems with the formating of the original on-line story and I see they've fixed those. Here's the new link:

http://www.hawkcentral.com/apps/pbcs...329/1053/HAWKS

Short version - they're not nearly as good across the board as most of their fans think; the two problems (as they see it) are low population base and lack of appropriate facilities...

Key Point: article provides fact(s) with which a Cyclone fan can debate a hawk fan on the quality of our respective athletic departments.

I like to tell Hawk fans, that they should have a great program when everything is basically handed to them on a silver platter in the State of Iowa. I'd rather have a program that has to scratch and claw for most everything and earn respect than to have a program that seems to be handed every advantage in the State to get it.

I would also tell them that it's amazing that there are so many Hawk fans considering that the majority of them have never set foot on the campus. I guess they must have taken those U of I correspondence courses...

Re: Need Ammo for Watercooler Battles with Hawk Fan?

What? You mean U of I ACTUALLY HAS a campus? I thought it was just a bunch of buildings scattered around Iowa City and Coralville.

That being said, we may need to clarify. Many of those have been in the black holes known as Kinnick or Carver/Hawkeye. Minus those two buildings I'd say a majority of their fans have never been on campus.
