The consensus around here is that if you are on academic scholarship it still counts against the teams scholarship number. Otherwise the number of scholarships would be mute because you could just give someone an academic instead.

I don't think that there is any non-athletic aid available in a case like this. Only 13 players are allowed to receive financial aid regardless of the source. He would have to be a true walk-on and be responsible for all of his expenses.

I know non-scholarship players obviously have to pay for their own tuition and school fees, but I would imagine that any member of the basketball team would be provided the needed equipment (ie, uniform, shoes, etc..). Is that not the case?

Is that not the case? That is correct. ANY member of the team, including walk-ons, managers, etc. are entitled to the gear at least. They would also receive any freebies that the team gets, such as the Big 12 gifts at the end of the year, and any tournament gifts that the team gets (which are usually really nice!). The big difference is just that they don't get any money towards school.

Meh...I'll put stock in these basketball rumors when the dust settles.

Re: No one is leaving
People need to look at this differently than some currently are.
He made an agreement when he came in that he would only get a schollie if it wasn't needed elsewhere. Obviously we need it elsewhere. It's not a matter of anybody taking advantage of anybody. Obviously he would have been a key player at Iowa this year and next so he made the decision completely on his own.
AT loves being a Clone and we need him. He has a place on our team and he understands it can benefit the team greatly by freeing up a scholarship to bring in another true freshman with potential.
A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player. -
Re: No one is leaving
Since AT is a post player, just not being coached Alford and being coached by G Mac is worth not being on scholarship.

Re: No one is leaving
Not saying the starter of this thread is wrong, but I'd wait until after the season is over before just believing anything anyone says, including coaches. Why would he come out and say someone is leaving at this point in the season? No point.

Re: No one is leaving
If true, I wonder how much say AT had in the matter.

Re: No one is leaving
AT agreed to it when he transferred. I seriously doubt it was his idea though. :) It won't matter, he'll be on scholly next year. When's the last year we didn't lose a player or someone didn't qualify? Seriously, I'd like to know.

I think when this thing sorts itself out, AT will still be on scholarship.
Psyched about the Clones!!! -
Re: No one is leaving
We need to remember that at Iowa they considered AT to be a great practice player but not a great game player. I bet if he has a great Junior year they will find a schollie for him. He had a chance out of high school to get a schollie from ISU and he decided at that time he wanted to be a Hawkeye. Also, we need to remember that this is not the old staffs that use to chace off players, Coach Mac was not known for that at UNI and I highly doubt that he'll be known for that at ISU. Think positive, in a couple years things could be very good again.

Now...when do we start talking about this season, because - it's not over yet....
