It probally took some pressure off of Paul to maintain whatever grades he had to maintain to keep that Presidential scholorship. Plus there are other benefits to an athletic scholorship, like getting to eat at the training table and such.
But I think that mostly he had paid his dues and the coaching staff wanted to reward him, make him feel appreicated. Plus we had a more tallented rosters at that time and were not so desperate for bodies. Additionally when did LE ever have a full roster of scholorship players.

I thought grades were never a problem for Paul and with LE's turnover, scholly's were even tighter. Is the training table really closed to non-scholarship athletes?
