No, farmers aren't important at all. But let's see how well this journalist can live when he can't go to the store and buy food because there are no farmers. Last I checked, people can survive without knowing what Paris Hilton wore last night, but they might have a harder go at it without something to eat.

WHat a joke this guy needs to live in a place with no farmers. He would need expensive equipment to get things done, never mind the hard work that laid the ground work for all the luxuries we have today. What a d-bag

So I can assume that you don't like freedom of speech since you moved to China?

Having the Freedom to do something doesn't mean that you necessarily should do it.

C'mon folks...take a step back...that article just screams satire. They've probably got a pool running at the paper to guess how many nasty emails they'll get from people who think it's a serious article. The kid probably just covered the chapter on satire in his "Techniques of Journalism" class...

I'll give him a C-...too over the top...

Re: A Slap in the Face for Agriculture

After reading some of the fourm stuff here http://www.themaneater.com/forum.php, some other editor is saying that it was clearly satire and states "The fact that such an outrage was caused over this article is perhaps even funnier than the article itself." He said that the article was meant for some "entertainment" and that everone should shut up and enjoy the newspaper

I can see this getting some national media attention, because big wigs are starting to send in letters. ie dept heads at other universities that are ag related and some big companies like Monsanto and John Deere

Re: A Slap in the Face for Agriculture

This article has clearly got to be an over-the-top attempt to get ratings for the idiot writing the opinion. I was raised on the farm and can assure Mr. pencil pusher that Agriculture has more affect on gov't policy on a Sunday morning then media types who take the facts and adjust them to fit the writers bias have in an entire year. All equipment owned by farmers has rust shows the guy has not been in 75% of the machine sheds in my area because if you're going to spend $300,000 on a combines w/heads, I'll guaranasstee you it better not be setting out in the elements when not in use and the same thing goes for tractors, trucks etc.

All a journalist needs is a pencil(some sharper then others), and a piece of paper. Farmers have many dollars tied up in the crop and, I would venture to guess have more common sense in their ear lobes then this guy, if he has any remote spin of seriousness in this article, has in his entire body. Somebody wants ratings and writing something this stupid has to be a futile attempt at doing this...

No journalist (who hoped to be employed in the future) would write that article in seriousness.
