WBB Recruits

Actually, even though last night Georgia was at their very best, I am not sure how many times we would beat them. They didn't make any shots their first game, but held Belmont to 36 points. They were better, athletically, than us at every position.

If it was a tightly called game, we would definitely have a chance, but I thought that their quickness got into our girls heads. We ran some plays for threes, but the girls were so worried about Georgia's quickness, that they never got their feet set, even though they were open. It's kind of like a wide receiver hearing footsteps when going over the middle.

I think that Bill is a good man, and his girls appear to be well behaved, and go on to lead productive lives. He does it the right way, and his teams are fundementally sound. But there are whispers out there, that people aren't happy with his recruiting like Shockin is saying.

Bill has had some real successes here at Iowa State, conference championships, deep NCAA and NIT runs. He has whetted the fans appetites, and Iowa State fans show up for games. I wonder if, in the end, he will TRULY be a victim of his own success. I believe that JP will give him every chance to climb that final hill, because I think that JP thinks it's the right thing. But the next two seasons are crucial.

You are way off base darts. There is no bigger fan of what Bill is doing and how Bill is doing it than JP. He is positioned to challenge for titles year in year out, has teams fans can appreciate and support and has a strong track record. Any whispers are not coming from Jacobson...and clearly not from JP

Cross JP off the list as a whisperer. During the half time interview, when things were as black as they get, (anyone else who heard the interview correct me if I'm wrong) I think I heard JP say the second round is good enough - he is content with the program. There are fans, me among them, who always want more, (but, who at the same time will defend Fennelly).
I'm intriqued that there are voices saying that ISU just isn't good enough to get the best - these may not be the same voices, but, it is the same song we heard during the football coach search - Mac was as good as poor little ol' ISU could do.
We can be as good as we decide to be. How good we become will be determined by what we do, not by what has been done before.

Please read the post in its entirety. Did I say JP???? No, I said that there are some people who support the women's basketball team that are less than thrilled about Bill's recruiting.

I never said that I think this is true. I just said that I had heard it, more than once. I have said that Bill deserves every chance to make one more run.

And of course JP loves Bill, he wins enough, and draws fans to Hilton. At most schools women's basketball loses money. It doesn't here, and that is because of Bill. That is why we should keep him.

Pollard is a big fan of Bill Fennelly, and said so on the radio earlier in the year (when things were not going so well). He has known Bill since he was an assistant coach at Notre Dame (where he coached Mrs. Pollard, I believe), and even tried to talk Bill into leaving ISU to take the Wisconsin job several years ago.

That said, Bill obviously needs to to recruit more "athletic" players in order to make deeper runs in the tournament.

You miss my point Darts. When you say JP will give him one more chance to climb the final hill is where I think you are wrong. If Bill keeps us at the level we are at and have been over the last 10 years. JP and most fans will be thrilled. To imply that JP has an expectation for Bill to climb another hill meaning...what Final Four to keep is job is not at all the mindset. What chance and what final hill are you saying that Bill has to climb for JP to keep him?

OK, fair enough, but you may have missed my point in the post.

Bill is a competitive guy, like all coaches. I am sure that he would like one more big run, meaning winning the conference, conference tourney, and a deep run in the NCAA's. In fact I am sure he wants that more than any of us do.

This team in its current makeup maximized, perhaps exceeded, their abilities this year as much as any team I can recall. What we saw was that we just aren't athletic enough to compete, and win, at the top level of women's basketball. So the point is, that I think that Bill is well aware of this, and I think that his recruiting is beginning to reflect it.

So what I meant, and maybe I didn't clearify it well enough, was that Bill should get every opportunity to continue to build a more athletic team, so he can make one more big run before he retires.
