Diante's team advances...

The following is from the Milwaukee-Journal Sentinal. I have also included the link if you want to have access to the box score as well (scroll down a little):

THURSDAY, March 15, 2007, 8:35 p.m.

WIAA boys: M. Vincent 49, Mad. Memorial 46

Madison - A second-half surge by Milwaukee Vincent led to an overtime victory over Madison Memorial in the Division 1 quarterfinals of the WIAA boys state basketball tournament at the Kohl Center.

Vincent outscored Memorial 24-18 in the final two quarters and tied the game at 40-40 when junior Marvin Fitzgerald hit a jumper at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Bryquis Perine then hit 5 of 6 free throws in the extra period to help Vincent advance to the semifinals.

Memorial's Jeronne Maymon led all players with 18 points. The Vikings got 13 points from senior guard Diante Garrett and 12 points from senior forward Dominique Sharp.

The Vikings move on to face the winner of tonight's game between Verona (18-5) and Kimberly (11-12).

Top-ranked Vincent (22-2) won state titles in 1996, '97, '98, 2000 and '01.

"In the years we had some success around here, there was not an outcast on the team, and that's the way this club is. Every single guy is a friend of the other, and it's sure nice to see because that doesn't happen that often anymore." - Robin Yount

Hope they play Kimberly.

EIU is the other Okoboji University for serious students and home of Captain Kirk who pilots the Enterprise on its Trek through the Universe for finding his next great job. Captain, beware of your Superbowl.

Re: Diante's team advances...

This game was on Ch. 19 out of La Crosse, so I was able to watch the whole game. It should have been the championship game, neither team had lost to a in state opponent. Maymon and Nankivil were 3-5" taller than anyone from Vincent, and dominated the paint. Nankivil had a double double along with 5-6 blocks, very impressive. Garrett at 6' 5" was the tallest player on the floor for Vincent, on defense he played in the center of the lane. He is really smooth, long, and quick. His shots were not falling, partially because of Nankivil's intimidating presence in the lane. He scored 12 of his 13 points in the 3rd qtr. The ex- Iowa State player he most reminded me of was Ron Virgil, and if you are under 30, you probably don't remember Virgil. Garrett is rather small boned, and will probably never get to 200#, he is NOT your prototypical PG, but he looks like a great addition to the Cyclone squad.
