ISU in the lead going into the final day

ISU 83.5
Minny 80
I think OK State is somewhere close in 3rd.

ISU has 3 wrestlers in the championship match (Trent, Varner, and Backes); and 1 wrestler in the wrestlebacks (Travis). We have 5 matches left to wrestle and 20 more points to get (without major decisions or falls) if we win everything.

Minny has 1 wrestler in the championship match (Konrad) and 4 wrestlers in the wrestlebacks. They have 9 matches left to wrestle and 25 more points to get (without major decisions or falls) if they win everything.

It's very close for tomorrow. Minny has the greater maximum possible score (if the win every one of their matches with a pin) so technically it's theirs to lose. The math gets tedious--but think of it like this:

Championship win counts 2
Wrestleback win counts 1
Add it up and that's pretty close to what will happen. Remember that wrestleback wrestlers have 2 matches tomorrow--championship wrestlers only have 1. There are no possible ISU/Minny matchups tomorrow.

(Feel free to correct me if I made a stupid mistake.)

If the following is true, wouldn't Championship wins count for 4 points instead of 2?

Points earned by all-Americans:
Bonus points for placing first 16 pts.
Bonus points for placing second 12 pts.
Bonus points for placing third 10 pts.
Bonus points for placing fourth 9 pts.
Bonus points for placing fifth 7 pts.
Bonus points for placing sixth 6 pts.
Bonus points for placing seventh 4 pts.
Bonus points for placing eighth 3 pt.

I'm simplifying. The actual math is quite tedious--but the short version is that a championship win is worth twice as much as a consolation win (and no--that's not very accurate either--since a first consolation round win is worth more that twice a second round consolation win).

I'm just saying that for simplicity's sake--a championship win is worth 2 consolation wins--and whoever gets more wins will win.

I suppose that's not much simpler--huh?

So... can you tell someone thats not really into how they keep score in wrestling, what are our chances of winning this ?!? Do we have a good chance since we have more wrestlers in championship matches? Am i reading it right where the most points Minn can score is 25 and ISU 20?

Thanks for the help, its great that I have a problem figuring out if well win a National Championship in wrestling or get second:) Now if I could just get confused about our BCS points total in late December, that would be even better!

Re: ISU in the lead going into the final day

I am totally impressed, even though I am not a wrestling expert I am a coach.(IA HS Football) I don't care what you have to do, to go up the ladder like that I think is a super accomplishment. Kudos to Mr. Pollard.
Some folk have a feeling or judgement of character and ability to do the job. Obviously he has that!!! Could not be prouder (or drunker, notice the fragmentation and rambling) Anyway could not be happier and I know that BB and FB are in good hands with Mr. Pollards choices in those positions. All I can say is buy the tickets you can, give what you can and look forward to dominance down the road. I am serious about this, I think this guy is kizmit.

Re: ISU in the lead going into the final day

Just based on the points (3 Champs, 1 3rd (best case scenario)), we can get 56 points. If Minny gets one champ and 4 3rds, they can get 56 more points. So, they can earn slightly more points the more times they win. But that also does't count that the championship win probably counts for more than 2 points (A semi win was 7). We have more than 20 points and Minny has more than 25 points to win.

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it all out in the other thread.

All work and no play makes me a dull boy.

What the H happened to Iowa Softyeyes. Did Alford jinx the wrestling team also?

EIU is the other Okoboji University for serious students and home of Captain Kirk who pilots the Enterprise on its Trek through the Universe for finding his next great job. Captain, beware of your Superbowl.

No, they just weren't very good after the ISU/EIU match. They've been good, but haven't really dominated anything.

The ISU match was EIU's Super Bowl.

In the interest of full disclosure (and humility) I have to say I believe (though I have yet to confirm) that I was wrong. It should be:

ISU can get 16.5 more points plus up to 10 major/fall bonus points.
Minny can get 22 more points plus up to 18 major/fall bonus points.

Oops.
