Long Beach State coach Larry Reynolds will not have his contract renewed, the school revealed on Tuesday, just a week after the 49ers went to the NCAA Tournament.
The 49ers won the Big West regular-season and conference tournament titles before losing to Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last week in Columbus, Ohio.
"We appreciate the hard work and leadership that Larry provided," director of athletics Vic Cegles said in a statement. "However, I believe it is in the best interest of the university and the men's basketball program to make a change. We had a banner season, but upon an extensive review I came to the conclusion that a foundation had not been built to ensure long-term success."
Reynolds' original five-year contract was set to expire on April 22. He had asked for an extension but was denied.
"I would like to thank Long Beach State for giving me the opportunity and for the support of the campus, students and community," Reynolds said. "I wish the program well."
The 49ers made their first tournament appearance since 1995. Reynolds entered 2006-07 with a 39-75 record, but went 24-8 this season (12-2 in the Big West).
Assistant coach Reggie Howard did not accompany the team to Columbus and was put on indefinite leave as the NCAA investigates recruiting violations at the school. The team's recruiting coordinator, Howard was credited with assembling much of the squad.
At the beginning of March, the 49ers were in first place in the Big West and Reynolds felt like he deserved an extension.
"If you win the [Big West tournament] and go to the NCAA Tournament, some people will say great he has done what he was supposed to do," Reynolds told the school newspaper's Web site then. "Other people will say he has to win one or two more in the [NCAA] Tournament if he wants a contract extension.
"The only people that really know what is happening is the administration, and everything else is speculation, and if you start doing that you can drive yourself nuts."
During Reynolds' tenure the school hired a new president and Cegles, leaving the coach's future uncertain for some time.
Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative. ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other." -

My sincere hope is that they are left hanging for several days, and then Alford stays. That would be hilarious! -

If that happens SA will be out barring a miracle conference championship next season. Would be fun to watch him try to explain this away if he does not get the job.

They are completely conceeded in IC
From hawkeyenation.com message board: Re: Alford will be gone- so who's next?
I would guess the usual suspects whose names are out there already;
Altman,Lowery, kruger, marshall, steve mcClain(worked for barta at wyoming), kirk speraw, lickliter, bennett.
longshots: monson,amaker, pearl, gillespie,stallings,mcdermott, ect. -
Re: New Mexico officially asks for permission to talk to Alford
You also have to remember that Alford has Bobby Knight telling him to get the hell out of Iowa City. He is in a no win situation there. I am sure that his wife is over it, and I am sure that his kids are over it as well, and all of them would embrace a move.
Add that to the fact that New Mexico is a pretty good job, and it is a no brainer. It's a basketball only school with a nice building, and Albuquerque is a nice city, with lots to do. I think that it certainly would appeal to Alford in his current situation.

I agree, I don't think Altman would have any reason to go to UI coming from what he has right now. He's waiting for bigger fish to bite. bigger fish = Michigan
I can't understand why NM would want him, maybe this is a diversionary tactic. Maybe the AD at NM and Pollard are friends, and are further undermining the EIU BBall program

"Day after day, situation after situation you do things the right way. If you do things the right way, in life, you are going to be successful. I'm not just your football coach; I'm not just here to win games. I could not be prouder of who we are and who we are becoming, together. Re: New Mexico officially asks for permission to talk to Alford
Why do Iowa fans throw Gillespie's name out there, he would be such a dumb *** to go to Iowa, way out of their league.
A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player. -

We did that when we replaced the football coach. I seem to remember that Bo Pelini was everyone's early favorite, and he was considered to be out of our league (as was Chizik). But you are right, Gillespie is not leaving College Station for Iowa City.

Re: New Mexico officially asks for permission to talk to Alford
How'd you like to be New Mexico fan now? I'd be screaming, "They're talking to ALFORD?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I didn't think anybody could do that much meth!"
My guess is Eddie wants to bag on Iowa before they fire him. Getting fired wouldn't look good on his Golden Boy resume.

Re: New Mexico officially asks for permission to talk to Alford
Aren't there some planes we could be tracking to verify that Alford is, in fact, done at Iowa?
FWIW, it's now being reported by Andy Katz that the final details are being hammered out. Also says that sources close to Alford say that he wants to be at a basketball-first school.
