Re: Wow - UI is now officially a stepping stone

Hold up...Barta didn't extend Alford - Bowlsby did. Then, he left.

    *Bowlsby thoughts*

Here is a coach not many like and he can't seem to win enough. I'll extend him, then, leave for Stanford. Muuuuahahahahahahahahahahaha! *pinkie in corner of mouth* Mmmmmmmmmmuahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Damn, that Bowlsby is a smart, crude man.

I agree that Alford knew his days were numbered and wanted to stay one step ahead of having "fired" added to his resume.

Bowlsby gave him the raise. Barta gave him another year on the contract.

Yes. Pretty smart career move on his part actually. He may have sensed the blood in the water last year which would explain the Mizzou situation. Anyway, better to move yourself than get fired at a DI program. Just ask Steve Lavin.

I think Steve Alford is going to be the Norv Turner of college basketball. People keep hiring him, but know one can remember why.

no norv is actually good at something, coaching offense.
"Day after day, situation after situation you do things the right way. If you do things the right way, in life, you are going to be successful. I'm not just your football coach; I'm not just here to win games. I could not be prouder of who we are and who we are becoming, together. You do things right in the classroom, off and on the field; that's whats's makes us Cyclones and that's what our culture's all about."

Re: Wow - UI is now officially a stepping stone

Actually, when it comes to basketball, Iowa has always been a stepping stone. 4 of the last five coaches there left for greener pastures. Ralph Miller, Lute Olsen, George Raveling, and now Alford. Tubby to Minn. really shocked me, but he may have been in an Alford like situation, they aren't happy in KY unless they make the final four every year, and Tubby get's $1.8M to try to make something happen is MN. If MN can do it why not Iowa? Because they don't want to spent $1.5-2M. I think they will end up with Lowery.

Someone was saying on Cotlar this morning that Iowa can get a great coach. Since they don't have to pay Alford's buyout, they could spend up to $2 million to lure a Gillespie or a Pearl.
