Stepping stone? I disagree.

A coach realizing his days are basically numbered and getting out while he can? Yup.

Alford is smart...he knows next year is probably his last so he gets another job. Somehow he also gets them to pay him about what he was making at Iowa...

Barta was pretty smart on this one too. He put the pressure on Steve and made him leave on his own so he didn't have to fire him and pay a 2 million buy out clause(as stated in the Register).

It will be interesting to see who they hire.

Re: Wow - UI is now officially a stepping stone

Listening to the news last night it must be the top stepping stone. The locals have got EIU looking to get Pearl, Gillespie, or Altman goint to the black and yellow.
Saw an interview with JD Miller and he actually rattled those of in that order with a straight face! This will be fun to watch, they have a chance at Altman IF he wants it, but those other two are so far out of thier league... What does it do to a job search when you say your going after those coaches and the universe knows you are crazy? The University hasn't stated it that I know of but all the media outlets have.
Methinks that this is an opportunity for thier fanbase to come back together but if 1/2 of them believe that a big name coach is coming the 1/2 of them are going to be pi**ed again if they don't get somebody.

Re: Wow - UI is now officially a stepping stone

IMO, Steve has been looking to leave Iowa before he even accepted the job. Seems to me despite anything he said, Iowa was never his home nor did he have plans for it to be.

He seemed to always be looking to the east and dreaming of Indiana. When that job opened up (twice) and they didn't call him - that had to hurt.

It's like one of the Ten Commandments - Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors wife (and goods).

Steve's been "cheating" on Iowa for a while now. He finally signed the divorce papers and moved on.

Re: Wow - UI is now officially a stepping stone

Steve is a mid-major coach. He might have some success at NM then get another BCS conference job and show once again that all he can do is recruit decent talent to mid-major schools that other schools in his conference can't but when at a BCS school his coaching flaws are exposed.

You can only get away with having talent for so long (see Wayne Morgan) but if you want to coach at a major program you have to know how to coach and develop that talent.

Agreed. Barta made a Pollard-esque move.

I'm not so sure Barta is that "clever"

remember he did give Alford and extension. that was probably the dumbest move ever. he got bailed out there. i imagine he'll show us how incapable he is at running athletics by his choice of a new head coach. now that Kentucky and Michigan are still available.
