Our guard play can't get any worse honestly. I think Garrett will be leaps and bounds greater than any guard we had last year. Brister and Boozer could be too, sure as hell can't be worse.
You guys are nuts if you think that we wont be upgraded in the ball handling positions.
We cant get worse.
There are a lot of teams in D1 that are having success with freshman and sophomore guards. Why not us?
Things can always get worse folks. It's not like guard play was horrific this year - and I've seen teams with horrific guard play. It was bad early in the season and improved in the last few weeks.
I was looking forward to more improvement by current players while the young ones with greater potential progressed at a less stressful pace.
I agree though - why can't our freshman be phenoms? That would be sweet and ISU has experienced that in the past. Hopefully that will be the case - they'll be playing a lot of minutes right out of the gate.
The problem with this years team is we just didn't have enough scorers. G-Mac's half court sets don't require a PG that can break down defenders like LE or WM teams.
G-Mac needs a PG who can run the offense and limit turnovers. I look at the group of Hubalek, W. Johnson, Brackins, Taylor, Thompson and Staiger and see a group with some offensive skills. Next year we just need a JC Holliway type PG- not a Tinsley or Blalock.
I would take Tinsley over JC regardless of the type of offense.
86 has it right. McCowen was a shooting guard in HS, all time leading scorer in Iowa history. GMac made him into a PG that was good enough to get UNI into the NCAA 3 years straight. All 3 of the candidates, Garrett, Boozer, and Brister, are bigger, stronger, and more athletic than McCowen, and come from better programs than Wapsie Valley. All three are also bigger and stronger that what we started this year with. By the way, I know UNI is not in the Big 12, so no one will need to mention that.
