Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year? (limited to 1/3 of the field discussion)
Maybe this is old news, but I just saw this quote in an article in the Iowa State Daily.
Quote:
Meyer admitted last season that the ISU coaching staff gave him a limited amount of the field to work with, breaking down the field into thirds and clearing him to throw just to certain areas. "He's getting a chance to make more throws all over the field," receiver Todd Blythe said. "They're not going to cut the field in half or in thirds for him; they're going to say make the play where you can make the play.
"That's something he definitely has the ability to do. He's been able to do that since he got here. They're going to give him the offense and turn him loose. He's a hell of an athlete so he'll be able to do that."
I was a McCarney supporter, but if this is true, Mac was nuts! Why would he do this to Meyer? Is this why Blythe's production was down last year?
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
wow. just wow.
So this is why Meyer never appeared to "check down" receivers. :(
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
Boy, if this is true, then I have been giving some coach('s) way too much credit and have been way too hard on some players in the past.
Talk about a nut shot of the most epic proportion..
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
I will reserve judgment on that one until I see Meyer this season.
Do I think it could be true? Of course, I think back and him being restricted could have easily been the case. Perhaps, even though most of us really liked Fitch - it was good he took a different job after all.
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
Great find! That is absolutely pathetic. Do any other BCS schools run their offense like a high school? Who cares if Blythe is running down the field ten yards free? We don't want to throw to that side of the field this play!
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
if any supporters of the old regime exist, this should surely turn their colors..
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
This is a classic and major example of playing NOT TO LOSE!
I had said previously that I lost faith in the previous coaching staff after the UCONN debacle. I wonder what Mac backers have to say now? :angry6wn:
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
Perhaps another reason we never saw Blythe get upset with Meyer over not getting the ball when he was open (which is 85% of the time).
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
I'm excited to see an aggressive style of football on the field this season. I want to see our players runnin and gunnin for all four quarters.
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
(Bluuuuaaahhhhh) That was me throwing up in my mouth a little bit just now, what a sickening sub-optimization of an incredible offensive tandem. Can we please get their eligibility back from last season????
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
And WE thought our offense was predictable. Our opponents probably licked their chops while scouting us on film.
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
Why are you surprised? Has everyone forgotten who the OC was last year..?... First name rhymes with Blarney, last names rhymes with Totten.
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
That's why he checked one, maybe two receivers, then chucked the ball out-of-bounds every 3 plays.

Hmmm...was it Barney Cotton? Did I get it right?
Re: Meyer's Punches Pulled Last Year?
Would this have been a timing issue? Maybe the line couldn't hold long enough for him to look more - and as a precaution, the staff only gave him a limited range to throw to. ?
