In all this talk of getitng Pearl, Gillespie or a number of other names, it's nice to see some logic and rational thought. Pearl I can see, only because of his time in iowa city. But why leave an elite 8 program in Tennessee? And when they ran your mentor out almost a decade ago to boot.. Gillespie? What does Iowa offer that A&M doesn't? I have to believe that A&M has FAR deeper pockets than Iowa. I've heard entirely too much about Billy Donovan as well. That's just the crazy part of the jihadic-wing.
I was in Chicago for the weekend and a hawk aquaintance asked me what I thought about Iowa getting GMac. Spooked the daylights out of me because I had been out of touch with the homestate, and he said it rather matter-of-factly, as if it were announced. Now I don't think that's really in the realm of possibilities, but far more likely than some of the national names.
I will say that I think we're lucky that Alford drug his feet just long enough for Tubby Smith to go to Minnesota. Had the Iowa job been open at the same time, that would be a far more attractive destination - even I can see that.
I would have thought Iowa was a better destination than Minnesota, but now I don't think so. Minnesota is in a better area recruiting wise and are willing to pay more money.
The article can be taken as proof that the Iowa sports programs are nationally respected. Certainly their football program is, and in years past, their basketball program was as well.
Maybe Iowa Hawkeye sports have already peaked, like Peak Oil. Time will tell. For the Clones, we should be able to top the past without going overboard. All we have to do is let Bret make decisions on field. Like Mikey Vick.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style.
You have a point with the recruiting base. But I think iowa, with the success of FB the past few years, is probably a more stable athletic program, and probably has just a deep of wallets. Who knows. Basketball-wise, the facilities may or may not be comparable. But when you look at the plans that iowa has for CHA and practice facilites, and consider what they did to kinnick, I'd be encouraged as a prospective coach - at least compared to Minnesota. Now if they could only renovate their fanbase
We'll probably find out in the coming weeks. I wouldn't see iowa drawing away a coach like Smith. But since he was on the market and not gainfully employed, it's reasonable to think they might.
