strange read on scout by Miller
while I only troll to get the latest miracles being worked by the UofI, I found this by Jon. Very interesting read. If coaches are as loyal to each other as I think, the UofI could be in for an interesting search. Dark Side.

Re: strange read on scout by Miller
Very good read. "Duke of the Midwest" is the arrogance that most Clone fans have been talking about and dealing with for many years. This can explain alot of the distain for EIU.
I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone. -
Re: strange read on scout by Miller
Looks like Miller is starting to understand why we chastize the Iowa fanbase on their opinions about their history and their expectations for the program.

Duke of the Midwest?
How many consecutive NCAA Tourneys did Iowa make? How many Big 10 champions (especially prior the the Big 10 tourney)? How many times have they made it out of the second round of the dance compared to Duke? For crying out loud, HOW MANY TIMES HAVE THEY ACTUALLY BEATEN DUKE??? (as far as I can remember, just once, the week before Chris Street died)
This is just as bad as Iowa claiming that every starting QB that comes thru their system is Heisman-trophy caliber, that they are BCS-worthy every year (at the very least New Year's Day bowl bound), that their biggest rivals are Ohio St. and Michigan, and that they are respected nationally (although the media does have a love affair with them).
I am really looking forward to 5 years from now when EIU has hit rock-bottom and at the very least we're solid, hopefully in our glory years.

Re: strange read on scout by Miller
That was a d@mn good write-up by Jon.
In all this talk of getitng Pearl, Gillespie or a number of other names, it's nice to see some logic and rational thought. Pearl I can see, only because of his time in iowa city. But why leave an elite 8 program in Tennessee? And when they ran your mentor out almost a decade ago to boot.. Gillespie? What does Iowa offer that A&M doesn't? I have to believe that A&M has FAR deeper pockets than Iowa. I've heard entirely too much about Billy Donovan as well. That's just the crazy part of the jihadic-wing.
I was in Chicago for the weekend and a hawk aquaintance asked me what I thought about Iowa getting GMac. Spooked the daylights out of me because I had been out of touch with the homestate, and he said it rather matter-of-factly, as if it were announced. Now I don't think that's really in the realm of possibilities, but far more likely than some of the national names.
I will say that I think we're lucky that Alford drug his feet just long enough for Tubby Smith to go to Minnesota. Had the Iowa job been open at the same time, that would be a far more attractive destination - even I can see that. -
Re: strange read on scout by Miller
One of the better articles I've read on HN. Very real. Granted, a good share of it was copied from that 1999 mag. article - yet it's use was perfect.
Some people have a great way of seeing into the future.
Iowa basketball is definitely at a crossroads. A new coach could get them back to the results from the Tom Davis years or continue the sub-par years of the Alford era.
Combine that with the disappointment from the last 2 years in football and Hawk fans are getting rather restless.

The article can be taken as proof that the Iowa sports programs are nationally respected. Certainly their football program is, and in years past, their basketball program was as well.

Very objective article from Jon. I doubt he will convince many of the chicken hawk fanbase, but I thought it was a great read and probably a tough pill for Jon to swallow when he came to reality.

Re: strange read on scout by Miller
Good article. Personally I don't see anything wrong with Iowa having the goal of being the Duke of the midwest. That's a good goal, but it is a bit brash saying it publically and you need to follow through with what you say and Steve didn't do that.

Re: strange read on scout by Miller
I thought it was a good article and summarizes the problem Barta is going to have getting an established major conference coach interested with the other major openings around the country.
I think to get any name caoch in Iowa City they will have to spend a minimum of the $1.8 million Tubby got in MN. Pay good coaches enough and they will come take some risks. That is how we got Orr.

I agree that being the "Duke of the Midwest" should be the goal of every athletic department in the midwest.
There's a big difference between wanting to emulate Duke and treating people like you ARE Duke. The article Jon's using says as much. The title of "Duke of the Midwest" should be something that outsiders bestow on you, and your program should be humble enough to accept the monaker without much fanfare. Its just like the athlete who gets pulled over for speeding and plays the "Don't you know who I am?" card. Nothing makes you look more pompus and arrogant.

What's crazy is that people on the Iowa boards don't want Altman at all.

Re: strange read on scout by Miller
Um, wouldn't Kansas be considered the "Duke of the Midwest?" I'd say that they are the closest thing there is.
