-No reliable known running back. We have to count on a JC coming in or someone hurt most of the time.
-defensive backfield that was in complete disarray last season, especially the end of the year. JC's need to help a lot
-defensive line-among the smallest in the Big 12 if not THE smallest
-quarterback that must be taught to look at the entire field after running a zone offensive system that limited his options
Chizik needs some magic to pull all of this together. He's definately the man for the job, but he will need time and recruits. I don't know if he is surprised. Mac was 26-67 in the Big 12. I am sure GC has seen plenty of tape of us in the past. I think you can also argue we have a good amount of talent for a team that was 4 plays away from being 0-12. Lots of teams as bad as we were last year don't have four players as good as Meyer, Bass, Blythe and Bowen, and many have to completely replace their RB and QB, thats college football. Our O-Line needs a ton of work, and its a good bet we don't currently have the O-Line talent to get it done this year, but GC has a plan.

How would you compare the talent level to when Mac first came hear years ago? A friend of mine went to high school with Mac and called him after his first spring practice to see how it was going. At that time Mac told him there were only 2 players from the starting units that would have made the 2 deeps at Wisconsin. I really think Chizek has more talent in the cupboard except I also am worried about the O-line and D-line. I think we have some decent players at the skill positions but we need the lines to develop quickly for us to be competitive.

Jim Walden was all about the triple option offense and had a lot of speed, but not much size.
However I think it's normal for a new coach to make some comments about lack of talent from the last coaching staff to give them some manuvering room the first year or two when things dont' go well. Mac did it and it appears Chizek is alluding to it.

Re: I bet Chizik is shocked...
Would someone please point out all this talent that McCarney left us? We can all name a few players, but talent and depth? I do think that Chizik is probably surprised at just how little McCarney left for him. Most of the guys he couldn't watch on film because they didn't play much. Our pass defense wasn't even a D-1A level in my view. So yes, I do think Chizik now understands just what a project he has.

Maybe we have 14 real players on the squad and need 20 more. So give Gene a year more to recruit.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -
