I hear that. I actually think our D-Line will be much improved over last years though. Especially depth wise if our JC's make it hear, which is a big if. Rubin, Braaksma, Parker, and Frere all started games last year and Taylor was supposed to. With the addition of guys like Chris Lyle, Michael Tate, Chris Weir, and even Randy Kellman, sounds like we've a chance for a real improvement.
I doubt he's too shocked about the lack of talent or depth, if everything was rosy ISU wouldn't have made a coaching change.
I wonder if Chizik is a bit surprised by the lack of fundamentals and coaching these guys have had. Remember, philosophy of departed coach was that players should have learned fundamentals in high school. Things like tackleing. That is exactly what Chizik will concentrate on.
I had the opportunity to meet with Coach Chizik around the end of January or early February. He was not surprised by the talent, skills, or abilities of the players. He was not surprised by the level of player development (coaching) or instruction in fundamentals. He was not surprised by the "play to keep the score close" attitude of the program.
He was and is on a mission to establish a winning program.
Great post. I think that the coaches in the Big 12 were all pretty aware of how Iowa State played football over the past few years. It was pretty widely known that if you were Texas or Oklahoma and you came out and punched us in the mouth right away, we were going to back down.
It was also pretty well known that even if you were behind, but you hung around long enough, and put any doubt in our minds, you were going to be given every chance to come back.
I am hopeful that biggest change between the Dan McCarney and Gene Chizik era is a major shift in attitudes. That will be the toughest job that Gene has, to change an entire way of thinking.
I would assume GC may have been a little surprised to see the size of some our guys up close and personal (he has already seen them from the other sideline and on tape) but he knew what he was doing when he came to ISU.
All I know, I will be so damn happy that my game day buddie will NOT be calling the plays before the snap with 80% accuracy. GC will win at ISU because of the GAME PLAN. The right calls, not the best players is what will change the direction in Ames.
