New Cowboys Stadium

Someone sent me a link to the info about the new Dallas Cowboys' stadium. I don't know how old it is so some people might have seen it but I was amazed. They definitely took a Texas-attitude when coming up with this.

It will seat 80,000 for regular games and up to 100,000 for events like the Super Bowl. It has 200 suites at five different levels including on the field. They even have a suite that extends to the players' entrance tunnel. The two arches are twice as long as the one in St. Louis and the Statue of Liberty can fit inside the dome. Hanging over the field is a 60 yard(!) video board along with two 48 foot boards for the endzones and there are giant screens outside the stadium. The roof is retractable and they can also open huge doors in the endzones.

The cost of all of this? $1 billion, including $350 mill from the public.

It would be nice to see the Cyclones win a Big 12 title there someday, don't you think?

Well, looks like I'm ponying up some dough to be buried underneath the field.

Maybe Jimmy Hoffa would have some tips on how to do something like that for free...

Yeah, some of that $350 mill is coming out of my pocket. In the meantime, in east Arlington, there are streets falling apart and potholes big enough to swallow up my F-250, but the stadium is well ahead of schedule!!

Since I can't stand the Cowboys, the Cyclones better get their tails in there somehow, so that I can go watch a game in the montrosity I'm paying for. Also, the Cotton Bowl will be moving there too...

I get to brag a little... I work in the sports design area of the architectural firm HKS, the wonderful firm based out of Dallas that is doing this never before seen anything like this stadium. It's amazing...

some updates on the stats:
75,000 seats, with expandability for Super Bowl & other special events to get to almost 90,000 seats
the scoreboard is going to be 60 yds long, stretching from the 20 to the 20
the roof is so high, that the statue of liberty placed on the field can fit inside the stadium
we are installing the largest operating doors in the world, two 120 ft tall doors that open up on one end of the stadium
retractable roof that opens up to the exact dimensions of the opening in the current Texas Stadium

I don't have any background in architecture but I enjoy reading a little bit about it and following it and I've been impressed with the stadiums that have been built by guys like your company and HOK. It seems like people are doing some amazing things.

I'm curious how you got into that area...did you study that specifically or just end up in that division?

Is there a link to any conceptual drawings/renderings of this stadium?

We're one of the big 3 firms for sports projects right now, HOK as well, and HNTB with some other firms that can be considered.

I've always wanted to be an architect, went to ISU for architecture and have just had a real love for looking at stadiums and the way a fan interacts with them, and the stadium with the fan. There's so many little things that go into making a great stadium, and when I was looking at firms to work at, sports design was one thing I wanted to do, and it fell perfectly.

You can place the statue of liberty on the field and it will fit in the stadium... :)

I think Mr. Freud would have a lot to say about Mr. Jones' stadium (and the state of Texas in general...)

It's truly quite eye opening, honestly, to work with a guy like him. There are words to describe him and his, ahem, personality, that I just can't post.
