Re: KFAN is reporting Majerus to Iowa
Majerus once said that he would consider coaching at Iowa State because of Hickory Park!

He could end up being like Wayne Morgan, great recruiter, and not a good coach.
Coaching is certainly not his problem. He is a great basketball mind. All you have to do is listen to him on ESPN to figure that out. I think, with the way he analyzes on TV, he really wants to coach again and it is something he really enjoys. I think it would be a great hire for Iowa and I would be a little jealous. I love McDermott but Majerus brings instant credibility and he shouldn't have a problem recruiting. The one problem is he probably won't last long. He will either leave coaching for good or get hired by a better program. While this may be a good short term fix, I don't see him turning Iowa into a powerhouse or anything. i'm not sure John Wooden could get Iowa to the tournament with the talent they have coming back.

His ability to coach isn't in question.

Re: KFAN is reporting Majerus to Iowa
Majerus would be a great hire for Iowa, but someone tell me what has changed in terms of his health to make this possible. I remember him backing out of the USC job because of health reasons a few years back.
That being said, the Big T(elev)en would have two coaches called Tubby. *couldn't resist...I know it's juvenile*

Great, now we will have to not only put up with Kansas fans and their T-shirts, but now EUI will have the "Our coach can eat your coach" T-shirts.

Re: KFAN is reporting Majerus to Iowa
The more I think of this the better I think he will be for Iowa. Majerus brings a big name to the table who can coach and recruit. He's in all liklyhood a short timer, so he can bow out gracefully before the Iowa fans can turn on him. They can have a good assistant in place to take over when he does let go.
You could argue perhaps his age might hurt his recruiting(like it did Johnny Orr at the end.), but I'm doubtful it will hurt much at this point. It's a great hire...
Now Gmac, make hay and keep building momentum while we have time! It will be a few years before Iowa's any good even with this hire. They're basically in the same postion we were a year ago...

No pun intended I'm sure... "There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr -

Re: KFAN is reporting Majerus to Iowa
It's a great hire. Majerus should have won the National Championship in '98. As has been mentioned, he has one of the best minds, for basketball, ever. If the Hawks pull that off, then good for them.
Health concerns have to be considered though. He is a heart attack waiting to happen. He had the job at USC for 5 minutes when he realized that he physically couldn't do it, how much has that changed??? His mother is in Arizona, and also has health issues. I don't know what bearing that will have on any decision he makes.
I know that he wants to coach again, and that Iowa is a good place because he knows that they will be thrilled that his name isn't Dana Altman. So maybe that lowers the amount of pressure that he would be under. Plus he knows that he has a good hospital readily accessible in case there are any health concerns.
I guess in the end, that the Hawk fans ought to really appreciate Haluska. I think that Majerus thought that all of the co-ed's at Iowa looked like his fiance'.

If he only lasts a season, then that leaves them right back where they started. That kind of shuffle isn't great for player rentention.
I was under the impression that it's only because of his health that he isn't already coaching. That's why he ended up doing commentary.

Re: KFAN is reporting Majerus to Iowa
Who was it on here that said he left Utah in a mess. I read the article you linked and I see nothing serious at all. Wasn't one of our coaches paying for made free throws? Without knowing all the details, this appears on par with that.

Re: KFAN is reporting Majerus to Iowa
On the topic of the violations...I remember it coming up that he'd bought meals for players, but the catch was that he lived in a hotel, so every meal he ate was purchased. Sounds like the NCAA being a little over zealous to me.

man, with all the "Great move for Iowa" love on this board, i wonder if I am at Cyclonefanatic, or HawkeyeReport.

Re: KFAN is reporting Majerus to Iowa
From what I heard, the source of the NCAA violations was that one of his players' father was killed in a car accident or something. Majerus wanted to be there for his kid, so (since he lived in a hotel and couldn't cook at his home) took him out for a meal or two and just listened to him. I thought it was one of the worst moves the NCAA has made to punish him and Utah for such a thing. The guy is a class act and a brilliant basketball mind. Iowa will be lucky to get him and luckier to keep him around.
