Sports Lessons in Ames
I have had this idea for quite a while, and I would like to try it out this summer. I have long thought that the Ames area is pretty lacking when it came to sports instruction for youth. I made a website that I want to advertise around town for summer sports lessons this year, but I thought it would be good to get some feedback on here before I spent a bunch of money advertising it and had everybody think it was lame . Basically, my brother and I are both teacher/coaches in the area and are going to offer either 1 on 1 or group instruction for sports that we have particular experience in. We're planning to be pretty flexible and charge by the hour for it, as well as offering tutoring if needed. Anyway, if you wouldn't mind, we would really appreciate it if you checked out our website and gave us some feedback on it. You can either email, PM, or post your thoughts here on CF. If you think it's a good idea let us know, and if you think it's destined to bomb we'd appreciate knowing that too! Thanks for checking it out! http://www.geocities.com/sportslessons/1

“I’m just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard,” Eustachy joked. “If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, he’ll be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.” http://blogs.dmjuice.com/?cat=43 -
Re: CF member input/feedback requested!
I'm not sure if you're focusing this as a general athletic education or specific sports.
If a specific sport and that is football, I know the youth league I coach in is expanding into Ames. Actually, Ames is wanting to start one this fall I think and is getting help from the WDSM's league commissioners to get it started.
They may be a good resource for ideas/suggestions. Let me know if this is the route you're looking at and I can get you their info.
You can actually contact them via the website... www.wdmlpyfl.com
Good luck!

If your child is in need of academic tutoring, we can also assist with that during an hourly sesson!
I doubt to many will take you up on your tutoring until you spell the word session correctly.

Good luck! Thanks for the info...I am actually wanting to do sports specific lessons, but we're going to focus on different ones. Basketball/Baseball/Track are more my background, while my brother is the football guy. This would be lessons that we would be doing rather than a league though. Thats a step in the right direction getting the football league in Ames!

Re: CF member input/feedback requested!
What about your liability concerns? Do you plan on having the parent/student sign a waiver relinquishing you from all responsibility? A kid working on his WR routes could step into a gopher hole and twist or break an ankle and even with a waiver, you and your brother could still be found liable. If you could somehow set this up through the school you work for you would then be covered by the district's insurance. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I would look at this from all possible angles before following through with your plans. No matter what, Good Luck in your endeavor.

C.John makes a great point - I'd suggest getting some sort of liability insurance if you are not already doing so.

I like the idea Tigerhoops! A couple of suggestions/comments: - Are you going to provide equipment? If not, you may want to mention that the child(ren) is supposed to bring there own. Or maybe you will get into that kind of detail when they actually book. Either way, I think the more information upfront, the better.
- Is your target audience central Iowa? Will you travel to Des Moines? I think there may be some opportunity in DM as well as Ames.
- I think your fees are very reasonable.
These are just my 2 cents.

These are just my 2 cents. Thanks a lot for your comments! We would provide most of the equipment for everything except for their baseball glove. We are targeting central Iowa, specifically Ames, and would likely travel to DM if we could get enough interest (ie: enough kids in the same general timeframe that we wouldn't be driving back and forth for a one hour slot). Thanks again for the information...I'll try to get some of that up on the site when I get home tonight (no guarantees though...needless to say I'm not a professional web-designer!).

Re: CF member input/feedback requested!
There is a good market for this in the Rochester, MN area. Coaching services handle groups and will train individual kids too. They charge $20 per kids or more for the group and quite a bit more for individuals.

Re: CF member input/feedback requested!
I would try to keep individual lesson to a minimum, make sure parents are involved. Outside lessons would be great but this is a wonderful idea!

Re: CF member input/feedback requested!
If I was a kid, I would do it. The sports camps that were available to me were always either too expensive or too far away. :(
Boom.....transfer the karma -
Re: CF member input/feedback requested!
Making a camp-clinic t-shirt, or goodie bag that you can get from some sportwear companies are also a nice touch. FYI
