As the market value changes, it will be the right thing to do to give him a raise accordingly. Why short change him? I want us to do everything we can to keep Greg happy and wanting to be here.

I agree with Drive4Cy. McD signed a contract, a contract that contained a specified amount that he will receive as payment for coaching ISU. Apparently he liked what the contract said and signed it. Now once McD and the team starts to provide the results that we all expect, then by all means rewrite the contract. Until then, all parties involved should honor the contract as it was agreed upon. Any future raises and or extensions should be based upon performance and not merely for the sake of keeping up with the Joneses.

I'd agree. I typically rip professional players for wanting a new deal 1 year after signing their old one. Plus, he gets an automatic $50,000 raise each year plus any incentive earned bonuses become part of his salary as well. Let him get the raise by earning it.

Why does GMac deserve a raise?

Lickliter is clearly being overpaid. I do NOT think GMac is being underpaid for taking us to 15-16 this year. Now, let's say he takes us to 2nd round in NCAA next year, he definitely needs to be making around 0.8-0.9 Mil after that. Let's say he takes us to NIT, I still say we need to give him raise, but I am not so sure if he needs a raise now.

With Huggins, Self, and Gillispe (spelling?) - all potentially leaving, I am very positive we can do some damage in big 12 season. If GMac can take advantage of that, there's no stopping him from being paid like Lickliter - I just don't think he needs a raise now. A $650K coach can take a team to 15-16 season - I don't think you can claim more at this point, maybe the Kansas game would have made a difference if we won in OT.

I say we talk raise with GMac once this year is over, I have a very good feeling Gmac, ISU, and it's fans (us) will all be happy with this upcoming bball season and I believe GMac will get the money he deserves AFTER this year.

I also think that GMac doesn't need a raise this year. As long as he is content with what he has (and he seems very down to earth so I don't think he has a problem with $650,000 in one year), we don't need to go and "one-up" Iowa just because they like the open their checkbooks when it maybe isn't such a good idea to do so this early.

I think it's funny that they pay their coaches that much. To me it means that they have to keep forking money over to them to make them happy so they will stay! I think we are truly fortunate to have a coach like GMac who is worried about other things than making $1 Million in his first couple years, like winning and creating a solid foundation for continued success.

When the big wins come, GMac will get his outrageous pay. But until then, I'm sure he's not complaining.

When is the last time there was a stud bball recruit in Des Moines. Bobby Hansen? Morgan Wheat (who never panned out). Am I missing any stud DM area recruits? David Newman from Hoover doesn't exactly qualify.

I think the fact that his peers voted him the coach of the year might be an ok thing for him in terms of recruiting. Also, the fact that he's taken two teams from the Horizon to the Sweet-16 likely means that he can do more with less. IF he starts to get some talented players, he could be phenomenal.

To date, I'd say that Lickliter has done far, far more than Mac has, so to say Mac deserves a raise is silly until he starts to accomplish some of these same things.

"In spite of his size, Brackins is an incredible 3-point shooter. Will that keep him from hitting the occasional trey next year in Hilton Coliseum?"

I don't get these two sentences.

Most "bigs" aren't generally categorized with shooting the trey. With GMac getting on Jiri about not shooting the three-ball, it poses the question if GMac will try to do the same with Brackins, and the answer is no.

Why would we even think about giving him a raise? That is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard

Man are you ever a ray of sunshine. I for one am ready to giveup and put the MBB in the toilet. If I remember correctly Ames is very close to DesMoines. Do you remember the name Hoiberg. How about Collison or Hinrick(sp). Also Lickliter won most of his games with the former coachs players. I'm not saying he's not a good coach but he is not Billy Donavan. You have put MacD down and called Lickliter a Phenom Clone2thebone, ya right.

What are you talking about Williams? I know you're a young man, but please check the ISU history. GMAC needs a raise? Why? He had a losing record last year! Oh, we are to give salary increases based on what another coach earns? Let's see what GMAC does next year. Why give a coach a raise for a losing record? We just paid $1.5 million to get rid of Wayne Morgan who had a winning record after three years! We also paid off Dan McCarney who had a pathetic losing record after 11 years. Didn't we also pay off Jim Walden for a losing record? Let's set some higher standards for crying out loud!

I understand what you're saying, but in the article, it makes little sense.

You don't have to give up on the MBB. I'm not. But I'm also not giddy that the Hawks got the Coach of the Year and I fail to understand how it "is nothing but good news for Cyclone basketball recruiting, in my opinion."

He said Des Moines in the article.

No where did I put Mac down, but I don't think that you need to put him "up" when he hasn't done anything yet and we sure as hell don't need to give him a raise.

Would you say he's accomplished as much as Lickliter?
