ISU freshman pack on the pounds
Many of the new arrivals for last season have really been packing on the weight.
Ben Lamaak: 262 to 295
Bailey Johnson: 237 to 265
Austen Arnaud: 200 to 222
Rashawn Parker: 235 to 249
I was always really excited about the prospect of Bailey Johnson on the inside, Parker weighing about 250, and I thought Lamaak would be a sleeper and he's clearly working hard having put on almost 30 pounds since he was scouted in high school.
Here's the "pick up a fork big man!" section:
Matt Hulbert: 274 to 280
I thought this guy could be a sleeper as well, but I was hoping he'd get up around 3 bills for fall practice.

Why is this topic under the football section?!
Oh, I see, you are talking about football players...not the female freshmen at ISU.
Sorry!!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -

Sorry!! LOL!
We used to have a saying at ISU while I was there.
"Iowa State, where the chicks are fat and the chicks are fat."
However at the end of my tenure at ISU (2000), I must say the ladies were looking pretty darn good!
By the way, since ISU seems to be a little short at DT, do you think we could ever see a 3-4 defense until we get a few more? Parker sounds like he could be good as a rush and drop back coverage guy.

Thanks Bryce, now I don't feel so fat for when I go to the bars tonight!

Have you seen how short we are in the linebacking corp? That would probably put the death knell on the season, even if I don't think there's much hope in the first place.

Amen to that. It's no easy task implementing the 3-4 and it's surely not something you just wake up one night and decide to do it. You gotta have the right personnel and coaches that know the system well.
The 3-4 can be great - however if done improperly - it can be the worse move ever for your program.

"Iowa State, where the chicks are fat and the chicks are fat." At the place I went before I transfered to ISU we said there's tons of chicks here, just not very many.

Re: ISU freshman pack on the pounds
I see a lot of SEC football. The type of attacking defense that I believe Chizik plans to employ will often have 7-9 guys right at the line of scrimmage in some sort of blitz package. Some of them come and some of them drop off. You are not going to see the traditional 4-3 or 3-4 type of "defensive" defense...what I think he plans on doing would best be termed "offensive" defense. No more sitting back on defense waiting to see what the offense does...we are going to get after them and try to throw them out of their rhythm!

So you mean we won't be giving everyone a 15 yard cushion? We won't be running around like chickens with our heads chopped off trying to get in position while the play is already started?

If that happens again, I will be severely disappointed in the coaches throughout the off-season. I want to see improvement from what we had been seeing.
P.S. Thank God CF is back up, I was starting to get the shakes...

Re: ISU freshman pack on the pounds
I don't think there's any reason for Hulbert to play at over 290-295. I think with McFarland the days of the 320lb tackle at ISU are over.
Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating. -
Re: ISU freshman pack on the pounds
Hopefully Lamaak can turn some of that baby fat into muscle and develop a mean streak because he is freakishly athletic for 290. The guy stepped and played QB his senior year, standout b-ball player etc. He could make a good LT.
...and with Hulbert, I don't think he really has the frame to put on a lot of weight. He doesn't really look like at OL, really tall but narrow shoulders/frame etc. kinda looks like a basketball player.

Re: ISU freshman pack on the pounds
We don't have the personnel for a 3-4 right now. With the 3-4, you need run stopping DEs. Parker would be an OLB in a 3-4 defense.

Re: ISU freshman pack on the pounds
Its Tampa 2..... big physical DTs so that we can spread our athletic defensive ends out further to leave room for the linebackers who are also suppose to be fast an physical to hit the holes and keep a constant pressure on. With tall quick hard hitting CBs and physical safeties. Its an agressive hard hitting Chizik defense someone once said, Chizik is Ukranian for "head to head" dont remember where i saiw it quoted but it was after one of Chiziks hitmen took out... ok i found it
PENALTY, SCHMENALTY: KLATT GETS CONCUSSED
In case you tuned out when the score got to 56-3, we don’t blame you, but a sickening hit late in the Colorado-Texas game gave Joel Klatt the most obvious on-field concussion since…well, since another one of Gene Chizik’s assassins hit Reggie Brown so hard last year we thought he was dead on impact.
Here’s the video.
Add that to the infamous Junior Rosegreen “Cruciatus” hit on Reggie Brown last year and combine it with, oh, say, this screenshot from Joey’s fantasies, and Chizik’s defense’s thug rating lies somewhere between C-Murder and Charles Taylor, former Liberian leader whose “He killed my ma, he killed my pa, I’m voting for him anyway” slogan holds a lofty rank in the roster of “Brutally Honest Campaign Slogans.”
Chizik is Ukrainian for “Helmet to helmet.”
