Quiz: What was the most popular football cheer in the 70s at ISU?

Answer: "All the way to the Cave Inn." The Cave Inn was THE bar in those days, and when ISU was headed south in the old stadium, the Cave Inn chant was king.Second most popular, golden oldie, "Let's go state" Some little known trivia.

In the early 70's, before Johnny Majors arrived, the football team was not very good. The most popular cheer then was "OOOOOHHHHHH S--T"

??? '70 Majors was 4-7 with a couple of near miss upsets, '71 they were 8-3 and Sun Bowl bound, '72 brought another bowl. '73 brought Bruce, who had some lean years but they were always competitive.

4 bowls in those 10 years and the '76 team should have been 5 - not sure what you mean by "OOOOOOOHHHH S--T" The '70s were a pretty good decade for the 'Clones.

You had to be there, Cave Inn was my joint to drink to excess and stumble to the Towers. Yes, it was the cheer of the day at Clyde Williams also. As for the Major's years, that to me was when the expectations changed for me.....Bowls and winning football were here and I expected to win. Earl Bruce and the running game (3 yards and a cloud of dust, Earl) were the days of the new stadium. Then Criner and Walden and Duncan and ..................

Officially, "All the way to Lincoln Way" or "All the way to WestGate" at Clyde Williams. It may have been the sixties, but, the Schlitz jingle was very popular when I went to games "Nothing else comes near, When you're out of Schlitz, you're out of beer."

Why not us?

I remember a tee shirt with "Huck the Fuskers". It was kind of tough to use as a cheer though, especially after the first wine-skin. Plus you could only use it at one game every 2 years. But still a great cheer.

As for bars, my hangout was a place called Dugan's Deli. Not sure about the spelling though. I think it was the only place in town that had Guinness on tap.

I remember the Huck the Fuskers T-shirts well. Guinness Stout at Dugan's Deli was always great at St. Pat's Day. Dugan's also had pretty good food. Dugan's was also known to have some strange customers that hung out there some.

I remember "Kill, maim, destroy" at old Clyde Williams. I also remember Husker fans rolling in with big 10-gallon red hats back then. I watched an ISU student pluck one off a guy's head after the game and the chase was on.

"kick em in the left knee, kick em in the right knee, kick em in the we need a touchdown"

we had some drunk student leading cheers, it was great... get Jeff Johnson off the field and get a student out there....

Schlitz beer is making a comeback! It is available at HyVee East in Ames. If you've never tried it..buy a 12 pack for the Spring game and get in the spirit. When you're out of Schlitz, you're out of beer!

Don't some of you guys remember "the mike men"? They were those guys with big 'fro's down on the field yelling through the amps;

"Uh, un-gwa, we got pow-wa"

and

"Cyclones got that mum-bo jum-bo, uh, ah!"

We knew how to rock!
