Justin Wren: MMA
Locals cheer on Bishop Lynch-ex: The biggest cheers of the night were reserved for Justin Wren, a former Bishop Lynch wrestler. A 6-4, 270-pounder, Wren received a rousing ovation before his fight with San Diego's Justin Howard, and Wren gave the people what they wanted. The fight was stopped in the second round, when Howard tapped out by strikes after being taken down to the canvas. Wren, 19, said he will wrestle at Iowa State next season. http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dw...r.39698d4.html
Thought most athletes did this after their college career was over.
Does anyone else have info on him?
I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone. -
Re: Justin Wren: MMA
Did anyone else notice this???????? I knew he was doing some MMA, but didn't realize he was doing well. Brazilian takes heavyweight crown: In the main event, Brazilian Pedro Rizzo won the IFA World Heavyweight title by beating former Iowa State football player Justin Eilers in a three-round decision. Rizzo knocked Eilers down midway through the first round, and the two fought on the ground until the bell. The last two rounds were filled with action, as each fighter bloodied the other.

Re: Justin Wren: MMA
It shouldn't be a worry for Cael or Wren as long as Justin is careful about maintaining his eligibility.

Re: Justin Wren: MMA
um all i have heard was that he is a recruit that is going to be here next year. He was not listed on the roster for this year, wouldnt he be listed if he was on medical redshirt?
I have heard that most people that is familiar with ISU athletics is that once he is on schooly he will be asked to not do MMA.
I also am wondering how it is possible to move around the lineup to fit in a heavyweight? Big Z would have to lose a lot of weight to get down to 197, at least 20 pounds.

I just can't see Z doing it, but if he could he would be a beast at 197. Z was always going to struggle against the big heavyweights like Cole but if he dropped down he could be really good at 197. I just don't think Z has 20 to 30 pounds to lose though. He looks pretty lean the way it is and doesn't really have any fat to lose. Plus its always better health wise to have a guy move up, not down. If he can do it though, this is gonna be one hell of a team.
I believe Wren is taking classes now because I see him all the time around Oak-Elm with his girlfriend. He might have started in January or something.

Re: Justin Wren: MMA
I think that Wren could maybe even beat out Z but then there is the question if Cael will red-shirt him. Last year we redshirted all of the 6 recruits coming in even though it was said that many of them would have been the starting wrestler at their weights. If Z could make it down to 197 and Cael has Wren start in his true freshman year then we will have one killer line-up!

Re: Justin Wren: MMA
I have heard that Wren and Z have wrestled twice. Wren beat him both times and one was by pin. If he is that good, Z will never see the mat again unless he moves down.
Edit: I've met Wren before and he was very confident he was going to wrestle next year. He pretty much guaranteed he'd be wrestling. I don't think he'll red-shirt.

Crocrop will kill him. Fine looking prospect though.

Re: Justin Wren: MMA
Two years ago we did not have the talent like that we were redshirting that year. I remember reading somewhere that some the the 6 wrestlers that were redshirting were beating those that were wrestling for ISU. I am not questioning how good Wren is but I am just not sure if we would not red-shirt him even if he could beat out Z.
The one thing that I am going to say that makes me think that Wren may not be red-shirted is that he is not coming from just any high school, I remember reading that he was spending last semester at a olympic training school. That could maybe have prepared him enough to go straight to the Big 12.
The one reason why I have seen why the redshirted all 6 recruits two years ago was because it is a big jump to Big 12 collegiate wrestling and even the best wrestlers can greatly benifit from a redshirt year. Remember that even Cael was redshirted his true freshman year so it can happen that you want to save your best talent for another year.

Re: Justin Wren: MMA
Yeah, I'd agree that most everyone needs to be red-shirted when it comes to wrestling. I just think Wren might be an exception to that rule. Apparently he is going to be spending the summer in japan for training. Not sure how many freshman do that but I would think you would to be pretty good. I think Cael might have had this planned for a while now. For Wren to step in right away at HWT with Z moving down. Kind of like before the B12's this year he said that Cyler would be moving up to 157 next year.
Cael's got a plan and he know what he is doing. We'll just have to wait and see what it is.

Re: Justin Wren: MMA
Wren is a beast, but a really nice guy off the mat. I think he must be doing something here at ISU now because I see him a lot. I approached and talked to the guy and he was not the prototypical holier than thou athlete and was very down to Earth. The guy is funny too and has a thing for midgets.
If Z is going to go down to 197 he will have to lose about 20 pounds of muscle which just isn't that healthy. But who knows.

Re: Justin Wren: MMA
He's actually training a girl I went to high school with in MMA. I think Women's MMA would be fun to watch.
