Greatest Dunks in ISU History
Just downloaded 1997 One Shining Moment from iTunes. Watching Cato made me think of some of the game changing dunks in ISU history. I know Clark has had some spectacular dunks - but here are three I think changed games and I'll never forget them.
Grayer over Dreiling at Kemper Arena in the Big 8 Tourney. Jeff almost jumped completely over the 7'1" Dreiling
Fizer over Mihm at Hilton - sheer poetry.
Cato finishing after blowing past Danny Fortson of Cinncinnati. CU was favored and this was a dagger!
Anyone??????

Anyone?????? For those that didn't see it and as a 20+ year dedicated follower of ISU BBall allow me to confirm that the Grayer dunk in the Big 8 Tourney was the best I've seen. Just the sheer amount of athletic ability shown on that dunk was AMAZING. Grayer jumped out of the damn gym and over a 7ft center in Dreiling. Grayer caught the ball on the wing, immediately drove around his man and toward the basket. Dreiling moved over to contest and Grayer just jumped like he had springs in his hi-tops and crammed it home two handed like no other. I'm pretty sure I still have that dunk on an old VCR tape somewhere. I must have watched it a thousand times and I kid you not when I say Grayer's head was at the rim.
There have been lots of great dunks by Clark, Fizer, Cato, etc., but THAT one is clearly #1 in my book.

1986, ISU vs. Michigan, NCAA tournament, round of 32, at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. With ISU holding a tenuous 1 point lead and less than a minute, ISU is inbounding at half court with Michigan pressing. Jeff Hornacek inbounds to Elmer Robinson, who's broken away from his defender and has no one between him and the basket. Hornacek makes a perfect pass, Elmer takes one dribble and throws it down. Seals the game for ISU.

Re: Greatest Dunks in ISU History
My experience with the Fizer over Mihm dunk... I was living where there was no tv coverage of the game... so I was streaming it in over the internet... I swear my computer speakers vibrated from Pete Taylor going crazy and the following explosion of the Hilton crowd... I didn't see it with my eyes, but I could tell it was something special ever thru cyberspace...
also... didn't Rashon have a ridiculous dunk against Viriginia as a freshman on ESPN? something like a behind the back pass from Will or Curtis on a fastbreak? Am I just making this up?? HELP!!
I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. Re: Greatest Dunks in ISU History
yeah frontrange - that was one of my first games as a student at ISU (although i had gone to maaaany games before - including the fizer over mihm one) and the leadup to that dunk with curtis at halfcourt doing a 360 pass to will who dished it behind-the-back to rahshon for the finish was the craziest i have seen in hilton. it used to be on youtube, but i cant find it at the moment...

Re: Greatest Dunks in ISU History
Fizer over Mihm, I really liked the Rahshon fastbreak dunk that involved stinson and blalock against Virginia.

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative. ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other." -
Re: Greatest Dunks in ISU History
It didn't have great game impact, but I was at Hilton once towards the end of a game (someone remind me the game) and Hornacek threw a lob that Grayer went into the rafters to get before hammering it down. That was athletic.

Re: Greatest Dunks in ISU History
Cato's dunk was just an incredible athletic move that just came out of nowhere. I don't think I had seen him take the ball to the rack from the perimeter before that, and all of a sudden, he just blew by the defender. That tournament made Kelvin a lot of money. -

I miss Marcus Fizer. Found this great compilation of his career.

It was around 11:00 in the evening and there were a couple hundred fans there to greet the Cyclones. I remember the fear in the eyes of the people working at the airport as the plane taxied to park and the crowd surged forward before the propellers had stopped!

Re: Greatest Dunks in ISU History
Curious how many here actually have seen the Grayer dunk in the Big 8 Tourney over Dreiling of Kansas. I think most are younger and are more familiar with the recent highlights.
I've seen them all and am going to repeat myself that the Grayer dunk is the best ever and it's not even close.
If I had to pick a 2nd place dunk it would be Fizer over Mihm.
3rd place would be an ally oop dunk to Terrance Allen against the Hawks back in the 80s. Terrance was a lil' guy but he could soar out of the gym.
