Poll: Most Heartbreaking Loss

We've been discussing in a few other threads some of the good wins and bad losses ISU has experienced. Time to see which was the most heartbreaking loss in recent history.

The Oklahoma one in 2002 was the most damagine in my opinion. We went in there high as a kite and folded for the rest of the season like we were the Minnesota Vikings. I opine that the football program is still not quite recovered from that. I hope we go in there and at least play with them this year.

has to be Kansas cause its the most recent. If it werent for that, it'd be Alabama...That kick was good!!!

I would have to say Mizzou 2004. Final Home Game (Senior Day). I brought a huge contengent of friends from Eastern Iowa to the game (do to the cheap tickets). I thought it would be a great experience for all of us to be there for the first Big 12 North title in cyclone history. This one hurt the most becuase so much was riding on the line and multiple times a championship was literally a few yards away. All we have to do is make a chip shot field goal (and the 3 plays before that we couldnt punch through on a & goal situation) and we win.

Then in OT, we make the stop on D and hold them to a FG. I thought for sure we would be able to get a TD. We run in down inside the 10 I believe (might have been closer). It was raining and a bit chilly, but the student section was rockin. I thought for sure we had it won. And then the INT. I dont know much about what happened after that, becuase I put my head down and immediately walked out of the stadium, leaving the rest of my group stunned on the bleachers. I dont think much more was said the rest of the evening. I hurts even to think about it now so I am going to quit.

I voted for OU in '02 (rhymes [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif[/img] )

I felt sick to my stomach, and the rest of the year and Heisman chances went down the drain and ruined.

The BigXII North Championship losses, hurt too... but IMO, the OU game brought us down to the level of our past, while we were surging UP!!. We win that game, many, many things move up for ISU football. And maybe the KU/MU games aren't even relevant.... What could have been!

05' Kansas for sure in my mind...I made the trip down with the Cyclone Gridiron Club....and what a long trip back.

interesting note from that game.....got into a friendly heckling match with the actor Paul Rudd (Kansas Alumnus and actor from such films as "40-year old Virgin, Anchorman) while in line for a weenie

I'm "for" the 2004 Missouri game. After the 2002 2nd half mess and the debacle of 2003, I thought this game was our chance to put that crap behind us - for a little while at least.

I'll never forget the missed field goal that would have sent us all out of the stadium like little happy campers. Then the interception.

I was in denial...seriously. I stood there waiting for more...there just had to be more. That wasn't the end of the game.

Alas, it was. I'll admit, I shed tears in Section 12 of Jack Trice that day. I never, ever wanted to feel like that after a football game again. Unfortunately, I did exactly a year later. At least I wasn't there to witness it this time. Even then, Mizzu would have been the worst of the two for me.

As the song goes, the first cut is the deepest.

I second that one! I voted for FSU because that was the most high profile team ISU had played in a long time (outside of the conference). But the 04 Missouri game was very, very tough to stomach. I actually already had purchased my tickets to the Big 12 Championship game, so you can imagine my feeling walking out of Trice after that game.

If we even stay relatively close to OU, and still lose, it's not as damaging to our season.

Write this down I'm predicting we win 3 out of the 4 games this year against Texas,Oklahoma,Nebraska, and Texas Tech.

After all the work to get back into it and having it slip through our hands, the Nebraska loss last year was the most heartbreaking.

Second was the big comeback by K-State in JTS several years back. We were up several TDs and big plays brought the kitties back quick.

Third would be the falling apart that was last year's Baylor game. That game was in hand and turnovers were just too much to overcome.

Fourth would be the Missouri game last year. Again, we had all the momentum and knocked the star QB out, only to let them off the canvas and back into the game.

The fact that I can name 4 that were not on the list shows the disturbing trend.

Wow- just reading these comments makes one relive the harrah!! again and again! wow, we have put up with some soul-crushing loses in the last half decade!

anyone remember Texas in '99? Taking them to OT in JTS? How many NFL players were on that Texas roster?

I'm a bit worried about the D this year, but I'm hoping that the young blood will have attitude, some young confident swagger... some of the young guys may not have the cursed attitude of coming up short.... and have more of a "f*** this! we're gonna win irregardless if it's Texas or OU on the other side of the ball!"
