Re: So seriously... do we go after Vette now?
I guessing we end up with Cem Dinc, which I am not real thrilled about. But hey, he's athletic and McD can coach. I know I have said this a lot on the board, but I am really getting concerned that we won't sign a good big man for '08.'

Crap.
Huggins has gone and Framklin No Name Martin has taken over. Patton is history. Nebraska signed 8 players. Iowa State will be close. The 12 North remains the Kingdom of Turmoil. Looking to JucoLand again.

C'mon Fellas,
Everyone is so negative about losing Marsden. Can he be replaced? Absolutely. This opens up the opportunity to find someone better than Marsden. Who was Wesley johnson? Who was Mike Taylor? I think the staff can certainly find a quality big man for 07 and 08. They are probably in and good people that no one knows about. If I was a quality big man for 08, I would seriously think about ISU, because there is a lot of opportunity for PT.

2000 was the last time we had any depth.. we had guys like shirley coming off the bench.

Re: So seriously... do we go after Vette now?
Last I heard Vette is still commited and signed with INdiana State. Contacting him would be tampering. So no not yet. I would say that we will probably look at Cem Dinc for immediate help in that area.

Ummmmm......eight guys played in 2000, the starting five, plus Rancik, Shirley, and Hawkins. Now, due to injuries, Rancik missed most of the conference season, and Shirley was hurt against Texas, and didn't play again until the UCLA game.
Now Brandon Hawkins, he played every game. So, for a great deal of the season, we played with a seven, sometimes six, man rotation.
In terms of Vette....this is the type of player that everyone was afraid that Mac would recruit when he took the job. He is a Missouri Valley caliber player, and that is not a bad thing, but he didn't impress me as a top D 1 type player. He would have to be developed, and wouldn't contribute for at least two years. We don't need another project player. I would rather that we bank the scholarship, than use it on this type of player.
Now, will we get a quality big next year??? I don't know, but we need to have more good players, regardless of position, on the roster. That is what I worry about.

Vette still doesn't like McDermott.

Vette probably isn't a project player. He might not have a high upside. A lot of the quality bigs you recruit are the project players. Highly ranked guys are a lot of times ranked on potential.

So you think that he is a serviceable player for us???
The kid had a great year, no doubt. But when you are 6'9, and play against noone that is even close to your size, except Cougill whose two years younger, then college will be a big adjustment. In that sense, he is two years of development away from being useful, how does that not make you a project???
He has a lot to learn to play at the level that we are talking about here. I think that he will be a slightly better version of Ross Marsden, maybe. And please remember, that this the type of player that Mac lived on at UNI. Part of the reason that Vette is not a fan of Greg's is because he didn't recruit him 15 miles away.

Re: So seriously... do we go after Vette now?
so we are penalizing him for being 6'9" 245 because he didnt play against tall enough players. Remember that award called Iowa Mr. Basketball, yeah he won that.
I watched him every game and there were several opponents in the 6'6" to 6'10" range and he owned all of them.
dont forget he played for Martin Bros and played against several big name kids.
Is he Iowa State material, that remains to be seen, but I guarantee he is probably better than Marsden or C. Johnson already.

Re: So seriously... do we go after Vette now?
Being from out of state I don't know anything about Vette, so this isn't a comment on him specifically, but I hope we don't offer scholarships just to fill roster spots. If there's no one out there that will contribute in the long run, I hope we hang on to the scholarships til next year.

Re: So seriously... do we go after Vette now?
I only saw him in the state tourney but, everyone I was with, was surprised that one of the in-state D1 programs didn't pick him up. He's a strong, mobile and pretty athletic kid with a good feel for the game. 6'-9" may be stretching it a bit, but he is exactly the kind of player McD used to develop into a solid player at UNI. Not sure how that translates to the Big XII....... I would much rather we use a scholly on him than a juco at this point.
