Will McDermott go after someone for '07
I was looking at Rivals (not premium information) and saw that there are a couple of BIG guys on our list for '07. I don't know how accurate this is and how much we're going after them, but the two are Kem Nweke (6'10", 295 lbs. from Texas and Hamidu Rahman (6'11", 265 lbs.).
Also, exactly how many scholarships do we have open for next year now (assuming Thompson gets one of them now). Is it one or two?
Should McDermott go after a guard, a big man, both, or save them for next year.

Re: Will McDermott go after someone for '07
Assuming Mike Taylor stays, I wouldn't go after another guard with the guards that we have now, unless you truly think you have found an impact player. If we go after anyone this year, I would put my vote towards a center that we could use for four years, and who would improve every year. But of course, if you can't find someone you like, the idea of "wasting" a scholarship for four years doesn't sound too good either. But right now I think our biggest long-term need is a true BIG who can get nasty down low.

Re: Will McDermott go after someone for '07
we need a big center that PLAYS big, 6'10" at LEAST. Hard to compete in the big 12 without a down low presence at the PF or C position (reference: Marcus Fizer)

Unless G-Mac Can Bring in a Stud, No Need
The loss of Marsden doesn't create a sudden need for a big man next year. How many minutes was Marsden going to play? IMO less than 5-10 mpg next year.
We still have the core trio of Thompson, Hubalek and Brackins to play the 2 post positions. Cory Johnson would likely have played in front of Marsden. Add to that- Wesley Johnson could play in the post like he did this year.
If G-Mac can find a guy he thinks could be a Big 12 starter in the next couple years- then we could use a PF, WF or SG.

Exactly dont forget 6'7 WJ who is more of a SF but can play PF as well.

We need a Tractor Trailer type of player...or better yet, a Bulldozer that can clear the lane!

It took Roy Hibbert a couple years to become a force. Playing bigger than you really are is what it takes, aka Clark and WJ. Having another Marcus Fizer in there would be nice, but it also took him 2 years to become an animal inside, and according to NBA.com he is only 6'8, which would probably explain his struggles in the NBA, too slow to play SF, too small to play PF.

Re: Will McDermott go after someone for '07
NBA.com is being very generous! I have played in a pickup game with Fizer and he is 6'6. Stronger than crap however, which made up for his lack of heigth.
Losing Marsden only hurts from the standpoint of having another body to throw in there to pick up some fouls. He played decent D and new the system but he was average at best. Most people wanted us to redshirt him next year so we should not be flipping out at his departure.
Plus I see us getting a surprise big man to committ in the next week for the 07 season. Don't forget the spring signing day is tomorrow and I think McD has got something up his sleeve

just think if agnew was on GM's team
Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative. ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other." -
Re: Will McDermott go after someone for '07
i disagree with your 6'6'' description of fizer he is easily 6'8'' maybe 6'7'' 3/4 for sure he is taller than clark and as tall or taller than wes. but thats beside the point, i think unless we find an impact player on short notice like wes but bigger, leave the schollies for next year

Re: Will McDermott go after someone for '07
How about Woody Ore? Apparently he wanted to play football but he's a 0 star prospect as a TE and a 3 star prospect as a power forward. He hasn't signed with anyone for football and if he hasn't done it by now the only chance he has is to walk on. It might be time to go back to basketball. Plus he's an Iowa kid.
Arthur Stewart would be another great addition. And of course there is Cem Dink. Iowa does have the best Juco system in the country, is there anyone out there worth getting besides Dink?

Its Dinc and Kansas has a better Juco system then Iowa. Not that it matters but yea there are players out there who could immediately give us more then Ross was going to ever give us...

Re: Will McDermott go after someone for '07
I would like to see a strong 6'7 or 6'8 power forward. I'm not sure that many other Big 12 teams have a true center, other than Nebraska. -
Re: Will McDermott go after someone for '07
cem dinc wouldnt be bad at 6'11 251. he could add some quality minutes for us at center and would be a good backup. it helps that him and mcdermott are friends.
