Why we may need to go Juco
I am usually anti-Juco like most who post on this board. I say bring them in as freshman, develop them into the player you want them to be, and watch them grow. We have had success with the likes of Jared Homan and Paul Shirley when doing this. While we have had success w/ Jucos (Tinsley), we have been burned more often. I think this year is different however and you have to look at it on a case by case basis.
We already have 5 committs.
Garrett
Staiger
Boozer
Brister
Brackins
If we get a 6th freshman to come in, then half our team is made up of freshman. What happens 4 years down the road when these players graduate? If we bring in a Juco that gives us a more even team.
Freshman- 5
Sophomore- 2 (3 if you don't think Dodie is leaving)
Junior- 2
Senior- 3
That looks better than 6,2,1,3 IMO
I think McDermott is a good judge of talent and will not pull in a juco unless he thinks the guy can come in and play significant minutes right away for us. No reason to give a schollie to another Marsden, who I liked but he was nothing more than 5-10 min guy the rest of his career.

Re: Why we may need to go Juco
Well, given ISU's track record the chances that all 6 of these freshman would actually make it all 4 years at ISU would be pretty slim. Personally I say we get a high schooler and not a juco. I'm sick of the juco route.

Re: Why we may need to go Juco
Very good point. Playing devils advocate though, what are the chances that all 5, could be 6 of our incoming freshman don't leave? I'm sure at least one of them won't be at ISU for 4 years.

Re: Why we may need to go Juco
I agree that not everyone is staying all 4 years. We probably will have a redshirt in their and a player transfer. If Brackins is as good as we hope he may go pro early.
I am saying however that this year a JUCO makes a lot more sense. Any big guy we get this time of year is going to be a project. A good JUCO player is less of a project given the fact he has played 2 years of college ball. 6 players in one class seems a little to much to me. Your putting a lot of eggs into one year of recruits.

Re: Why we may need to go Juco
I agree that JUCOs are higher risk. But if Big Mac does his homework, as he always seems to do, we should be able to pick up an good, experienced player without a lot of risk. Don't you think?

Re: Why we may need to go Juco
The good thing about a Juco this year is that even if they don't make the grades to get into school. There is really nothing lost. We already have a decent team so any Juco could only help. It's like Ross is not a big loss but he would have giving us foul and give Jiri a breather. If we get a Juco it might just eat some valuable minutes when guys get into foul trouble.

I'm not quite sure why everyone is down on JUCO's as I think that Jaxson Vroman, Michael Nurse, Jamaal Tinsley, Kenny Pratt, Shawn Bankhead, etc. have provided some great memories.
MT and Jiri are juco's that were 2 of our main 3 offensive players this past season and if Jiri continues to develop and improve as he did the 2nd half of this season, he could be very similar to Vroman.
For balance purposes, I agree that if any player is signed it should probably be a juco with best case scenario being a juco with 3 years eligibility similar to Jiri. However, unless a Reggie Evans type juco exists (i.e. solid rebounder and banger-type role player that our current team does not have) I'd rather bank the scholly and use it to round out next year's class and balance our roster that way. My biggest concern on balance is that next year we will have only 2 players that are soph or less that are considered inside players - CJ and Brackins and CJ is a tweener - and 08 already has 2 guards in the class.

Actually, I don't think Brackins will be anything like Taggart. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders and really wants to improve. H e also seems like a very good "team" player. From his interviews, he's willing to do whatever the coaches ask of his and he can't wait to get to Iowa State!!

Re: Why we may need to go Juco
A sophomore or junior JUCO would help the staggering of the classes. A sophomore wouldn't hurt for when Wes does go pro (after his junior year would make the most sense, but he's gone when he gets a chance). I'm not a big JUCO guy either, but one makes sense here.

Re: Why we may need to go Juco
Unless your name is Kevin Durant or Greg Oden, I find it very premature to even think about a player leaving college early for the pros.

Re: Why we may need to go Juco
i think singing one more post would be a good idea. im thinking cem dinc at 6'11 251 or just somebody who is really good at defense like a ben wallace type. though he is the worst free throw shooter i have ever seen and yes, worse than shaq statistically i believe. i think having another guy who could provide quality minutes as a backup would be nice.

Wallace is shooting 40.9% this year and is a career 41.7% free throw shooter. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/ben_wallace/index.html Some people wear Superman pajamas. Superman wears Chuck Norris pajamas. -
Re: Why we may need to go Juco
I say that if we can't find a good big man, then let's not waste the scholarship. I don't want to have someone on the team for the next 4 years if they're just gonna be a body. Hold on to it for a year and see what happens next year.
