What is the best photo editor?

I'm looking for a good photo editor software, does anyone recommend a good one?

I don't want to do anything more than just touch up some photos from my digital camera, red eyes, crop and maybe an auto fix.

Picasa is the free photo editor you can get from Google. I think it works great, been using it for quite some time.

If you got money to throw around... or a free download from your college maybe (People in College of Design prolly get something like this) Adobe Photoshop seems to be the big dog.

Adobe Photoshop Elements, hands down. It's only around $70 and will have all the features you need. It's basically like a light version of regular Photoshop made much easier to use for the normal person.

I highly, highly suggest The GIMP. (Yes, that's the actual name of the software.) It's open-source software, so it's completely free, but it's easily as powerful as Photoshop is. Having worked extensively with both, I also think that GIMP is a hell of a lot easier to learn. When I first started using it, I was able to figure out some moderate-level stuff without even consulting a help manual. Give it a try, it's awesome. It'll let you do all your red-eye and cropping, and if you want to try some other stuff, you'll have the option. Photoshop Elements only gives you a few things to do, and it still costs a bunch of money.

If you have office on your computer office picture manager is a good wasy one to use.

GIMP is good...I use it for some things that Photoshop can't do. For a free program, I think it's the best out there.

I still much prefer Photoshop. It takes some getting used to, yet it can do some great things as well. I still consider myself a novice Photoshop user...but am able to create some fun, enhanced images by using some of the basic tools...

Yes.

I took 3 different photos - 2 of mine and one from the DMR and resized each image. Then placed them on a blank canvas. Filled in the white space with color.

Was then able to save the ISU logo from cyclones.com and put it on the canvas - modified the transparency. Put the text on and I was done.

With hoops season over, I need to create a different one now.

Personally I use Photoshop Elements, Corel Paint Shop Pro and GIMP.

While I'd love to upgrade to full blown Photoshop CS3, it's not in the cards at this time.

If you're in starving student mode then download GIMP.

I'm a Photoshop user all the way, but hey, it's my job. If you can afford PS, it's worth it. Otherwise, like others have said, PS Elements is a solid solution for your needs. Haven't used GIMP, but it does have a good reputation.

Fireworks from Adobe (formerly Macromedia) is good as well.

There are several good free photo editing downloads, and Picasa is probably as good as any of them. We wanted to upgrade to a better system, but yet not spend a bunch of money, so we went with Paint Shop Pro. We bought it off of ebay for $29 and are very happy with it.
